Chapter 17 - The General's Last Command

Mercer had attended the gala in full dress uniform and acted as though the old convoy was a military embarrassment best buried. Now Marcus described him visiting Bellhaven several times, always asking whether he remembered the shipment.
“He told me my wife had remarried,” Marcus said. “He said Sophie was safer if I stayed dead.”
Elena's anger came slowly, colder than she expected. Someone had stolen years of bedtime stories and birthdays, then disguised the theft as protection.
Investigators verified Marcus's account against visitors' logs, medical transfers, and financial records. Mercer was brought in for questioning. Victor's lawyers publicly insisted their client had no knowledge of any unlawful detention.
Andrew knew better than to confuse suspicion with proof, but he was finished offering his father automatic innocence.
At a court-authorized search of the Hale Defense headquarters, agents recovered encrypted backups that an employee had preserved against orders. The files linked Victor, Mercer, Pierce, and Ruth to a procurement network that used shell companies to divert restricted components and falsify inspection reports.
One set of messages documented the decision to silence the convoy team. Another recorded the fake reassignment order for Pierce. The most damning file was a series of payments authorizing the confinement of Patient Thirty-One.
When Andrew saw the signatures, he sat down.
Victor had signed each quarter's approval.
“Did he know Marcus was alive?” Elena asked.
Andrew nodded, tears in his eyes. “Every year.”
She looked at him for a long time. “You're not your father. But don't ask me to make this easier for you.”
“I won't.”
Mercer attempted to deny the evidence, then demanded an attorney. Pierce was detained as he approached a private aircraft under a false name. Ruth entered a formal cooperation agreement subject to the court's approval.
At last Victor was arrested on charges that included fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and offenses connected to Marcus's unlawful confinement. The full case would take months, perhaps years, to resolve.
When agents led Victor down the steps outside headquarters, he spotted Andrew in the crowd.
“Tell them who made you,” Victor shouted.
Andrew held his gaze. “You did. And I'm choosing not to become you.”
May you like
Victor's expression twisted.
Then an agent leaned toward Daniel and said, “There's one piece of evidence we still can't find.”
