Chapter 17 - The Letter

Daniel read the sentence again.

The children were never supposed to get hurt.

As if fear did not count.

As if manipulation did not count.

As if teaching Noah to doubt his father had been a harmless side effect.

He continued.

I thought I could make the home situation messy enough that you would take leave, fight with your command, and stop watching the contract process. Victor said if you were distracted, other people could move things without you asking questions.

Daniel looked at Agent Kim.

"She used them to get to me."

Kim said nothing.

The letter went on.

I know what this sounds like. Maybe by the time you read this, you hate me. Maybe you should. But Evan kept pushing. He said children are easy because adults decide what their feelings mean. I started saying things I can never take back.

At the end, Claire wrote:

Victor has a second set of records. If I disappear, look at Meridian's old boatyard property in Chesapeake. Building C. Locker twelve.

Federal agents moved quickly.

The locker held financial ledgers, encrypted drives, and internal Meridian documents connecting Victor Sloane to a bribery network involving civilian contractors.

The case exploded beyond the Mercer family.

Victor was arrested.

Evan negotiated a cooperation agreement.

Claire was charged in both the state child-endangerment case and the federal conspiracy investigation.

But Daniel felt no victory.

One evening, after the children were asleep, he sat on the back steps with Rachel.

"I keep thinking about the warning signs."

"You can't rewrite the past."

"No. But I can learn from it."

Rachel nodded.

"What are you going to do about the Navy?"

Daniel looked at the dark yard.

He loved his career.

He also knew the current operational tempo had kept him away too often.

"I asked for shore duty."

Rachel turned.

"You did?"

"Yeah."

"Will you get it?"

"Captain Holloway thinks so."

For the first time in weeks, Daniel felt something like hope.

Then his phone rang.

Grace Patel.

"Daniel," she said, "Claire wants to plead guilty."

He closed his eyes.

May you like

"To what?"

Grace answered, "Not everything."
