Chapter 7 - The Door Behind the Shelves

Daniel knew every inch of the basement.
At least, he thought he did.
The finished side held a television, storage cabinets, and a small home gym. The unfinished side had a furnace room and utility shelves.
No locked room.
Detective Marcus Reed came with him the next morning.
Noah had described "the wall that moves."
Daniel remembered seeing Claire reorganize the utility shelves weeks earlier. She had claimed she was making space for holiday decorations.
Reed pulled one metal shelf forward.
Behind it was a narrow door painted the same gray as the concrete wall.
Daniel stared.
"That wasn't here when I bought the house."
"Looks newer," Reed said.
The lock required a key.
Daniel did not have one.
With a warrant in progress and probable cause tied to the children's statement, the detectives secured the area. Hours later, the door was opened.
The space behind it was barely six feet wide.
Inside were storage bins, a folding chair, a small desk, and another camera system.
Not for the house.
For Daniel.
Photos covered the desk.
Daniel entering restaurants.
Daniel shaking hands with a female officer after a ceremony.
Daniel carrying his duffel bag through an airport.
Receipts were labeled with dates and notes.
LATE.
DRINKING WITH UNIT.
FEMALE CONTACT.
MISSED BEDTIME CALL.
"This is surveillance," Daniel said.
Reed opened a drawer.
Inside were printouts of text messages between Daniel and Rachel, Daniel and his attorney, Daniel and his commanding officer.
Someone had accessed his accounts.
Then Reed found a small digital recorder.
He played the first file.
Claire's voice filled the room.
"If Daniel gets custody, we use the Navy angle. Long absences. Stress. Anger. Make him look dangerous."
A man's voice answered.
"And the kids?"
"They'll say what they're told."
Daniel's head lifted.
He knew that man's voice.
May you like
He had heard it at his own wedding.
It belonged to Claire's brother, Evan.
