Chapter 19 - The Last Secret

Daniel's first wife, Emily, had died five years earlier after a sudden brain aneurysm.
No mystery.
No suspicious circumstances.
No connection to Claire, who Daniel had met almost two years later.
At least that was what he believed.
The letter continued.
Before we met, Evan knew Emily through a fundraiser. He used her name to get close to you later. I didn't know at first. When I found out, I should have told you.
Daniel's hands went numb.
He called Detective Reed and Agent Kim.
They investigated the claim immediately.
The truth was ugly, but not criminal in the way Daniel first feared.
Evan had volunteered at a charity event Emily organized. After her death, he remembered Daniel's name, career, and financial stability. Years later, when Claire was dating Daniel casually, Evan encouraged the relationship because he believed a Navy officer with a good income and security clearance could be useful.
Claire had discovered this after the marriage.
She stayed.
Then she participated.
Daniel sat in his car outside the federal building after hearing the full explanation.
He expected rage.
Instead, he felt tired.
So much of his life had been turned into somebody else's strategy.
Emily's memory.
His career.
His children.
His home.
He drove to the cemetery alone.
He sat beside Emily's grave and spoke quietly.
"I missed things."
Wind moved through the oak trees.
"But I see them now."
He told her about Noah protecting Lily.
About Lily's obsession with pancakes.
About shore duty.
About the model ship waiting unfinished on the dining table.
Then he went home.
Noah was waiting at the door.
"Dad! We need you!"
Daniel's heart jumped.
"What happened?"
Noah grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the kitchen.
Lily stood beside the island with flour on her face.
Rachel held a mixing bowl.
A lopsided cake leaned dangerously on a plate.
"It's your welcome-home cake," Lily said.
Daniel laughed for the first time in what felt like months.
Then Noah became serious.
"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we lock the golf clubs somewhere?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Absolutely."
Noah nodded.
"And can I have the key?"
Daniel swallowed hard.
"We'll keep it together."

But the final hearing was still one week away.
And Claire had asked to speak.
