Chapter 1 - The Girl in the Pink Dress

The little girl in the pink dress walked into Julian Vale's locked study, set a battered teddy bear on his desk, and asked, "Are you the man who paid my mother to disappear?"
Julian's whiskey glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the marble floor.
Across the room, his security chief reached for the radio at his belt. Julian raised one hand without looking at him.
"What's your name?" Julian asked.
"Maisie Quinn." The girl hugged the bear against her chest. "I'm five. I'll be six in March. My mom says you know why she had to leave."
Julian stared at her. The child's gray-green eyes were his eyes. So was the tiny notch in her left eyebrow, a mark he had carried since he fell off a bicycle at seven.
Behind the half-open door, Elara Quinn pressed one hand over her mouth. She had planned to leave a letter on Julian's desk, collect Maisie, and be gone before anyone knew they had entered the Vale mansion. She had not planned for her daughter to march into the room alone.
"Maisie," Julian said carefully, "where is your mother?"
"Right there." The girl pointed toward the door.
Elara stepped into view. Six years fell between them like broken glass. Julian had once known every change in her expression.
Now he saw fear, exhaustion, and a fury so tightly held it looked like calm.
"You," he said.
"Me," Elara answered. "I need ten minutes. Then we'll leave, and you can go back to pretending none of this happened."
Julian stood. "You vanished six years ago with two million dollars from my family's foundation. You never answered a call. You never explained anything."
"I never took a cent. And I never received a call from you that wasn't blocked before it reached me."
"That's a lie."
"Then prove it." Elara's voice shook, but she did not look away. "Start by asking your mother why she paid me to disappear."
The study door slammed shut behind them.
From the hallway came the click of a lock, then a woman's cool voice.
"Julian, darling, step away from the child."

Lydia Vale stood outside with two guards and a smile that never reached her eyes.
Julian looked from his mother to the little girl clutching the old bear. For the first time in his life, he could not tell which person in the room was in danger.
