Chapter 14 - The Recording

A forensic audio specialist cleaned and authenticated the recording before they listened.

"The repair money is gone. Thomas has seen the report. If he takes it to the board, we're finished."

Lydia answered, calm as a woman discussing a dinner reservation. "Then the board must never hear it from him."

"He won't back down."

"He will if he believes his son will be ruined with him."

A chair scraped. Thomas Vale's voice cut in, tired but steady. "I am sitting right here, Lydia. You can stop talking about me as if I'm already dead."

There was a long silence. Then Lydia spoke again.

"You were never good at understanding what this family requires."

The recording broke into static. A few seconds later, Graham said, "The driver has been paid. The car will be inspected before anyone asks questions."

Elara took his hand, and he held on without speaking.

The audio specialist stopped the recording. "This is powerful, but we need to authenticate it. The defense will claim it was edited or fabricated."

Renee nodded. "The ledger and bank records support the recording, but we need the medical examiner to connect it to the crash."

They found Dr. Harlan living quietly on the coast and met him at a public library.

Harlan listened, then removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"I signed the report," he said. "The tire was damaged before the crash. I was told to call the evidence contaminated and close the case. I knew it was wrong."

"Did you know Lydia ordered it?" Julian asked.

Harlan looked at him. "I heard her on the phone with Graham that night. She said your father had become dangerous. I never heard her say the word kill, but I knew what they were planning."

Renee placed a recorder on the table. "Will you make a sworn statement?"

Harlan nodded. "Yes. I should have done it twelve years ago."

As they left the library, a car accelerated toward the curb. Renee shouted. Julian shoved Elara behind a stone pillar as the vehicle clipped the edge of the sidewalk and sped away.

No one was hit, but Julian saw Graham behind the wheel as the car sped away.

His phone buzzed before Renee could call for backup.
