Chapter 11 - The Hearing at Nine

At nine, the family court heard Lydia's emergency petition to remove Maisie from Elara.

Lydia arrived with two attorneys and a social worker who had never met Elara. Graham followed them, carrying a folder thick enough to look official. He did not look at Julian.

He looked at Maisie.

The petition portrayed Elara as unstable and claimed she had returned to extort money, relying on the old theft report and a paid witness.

The judge, a serious woman named Judge Benton, listened without showing much emotion. Lydia's lawyer described Julian as a wealthy man who had suddenly discovered a child and might be acting out of guilt. Elara's attorney countered with the forged letters, the trust document, and a sworn statement from Warren Bell.

Then the judge asked for the paternity results.

Julian stood and handed over the sealed envelope. The laboratory report showed a probability of paternity greater than 99.99 percent. Judge Benton read it, then looked at Julian.

"Mr. Vale, when did you first learn this child might be yours?"

"Three days ago."

"And what have you done since?"

"I have protected her from people who want to use her as leverage. I have not asked the court to remove her from her mother. I am asking for the chance to know my daughter and keep her safe."

Maisie sat beside Elara, swinging her feet beneath the bench. When Judge Benton asked whether she wanted to speak, Elara started to say no, but Maisie stood first.

"I don't want to leave my mom," she said. "I just want to know my dad. And I don't want people to tell lies about either of them."

The judge's expression softened. She denied Lydia's emergency request for custody and ordered a temporary protection plan that kept Maisie with Elara while Julian began supervised visits. She also referred the fraud allegations to the district attorney.

Elara's phone rang.

It was Warren's daughter.

"They've taken my father," she said. "And they left a note with your name on it."
