Chapter 12 - Celeste's Bargain

Warren survived an attack; his daughter found him tied up in the garage. Renee placed protection outside his house.
Julian wanted to move everyone into a protected location. Elara insisted that running would give Graham time to destroy the records.
"You can't protect us by locking us away," she said. "That is how your family silenced people."
"I am trying to keep you alive."
"Then stop deciding what safety means without asking me."
He accepted the rebuke. "Tell me what you need."
"Access to the foundation's old performance hall. The one your father used for community meetings."
"It's been closed for years."
"Maeve's last message mentioned a clock above the stage. She said the second ledger was where time stopped."
Before Julian could answer, Celeste Arden appeared at the door of the safe apartment. Renee's hand moved toward her holster. Celeste lifted both hands and set her phone on the table.
"I came alone," she said. "And I know where the ledger is."
Julian's face went hard. "You announced that I had a secret child in front of a room full of donors."
"I did. Graham was watching me. If I had refused, he would have released the recording of my brother begging him for money. He owns my family's debt."
"You could have warned us."
"I tried." Celeste looked at Elara. "I whispered the only thing I could without making him suspicious. I know that isn't enough."
Elara studied her. "Why help now?"
Celeste's composure cracked. "Graham called Maisie a problem that could be solved. I thought of my niece. I couldn't stay quiet."
Celeste said the second ledger was hidden inside the stopped clock in the old performance hall. Graham planned to burn the hall after the board vote and blame faulty wiring.
"If she is telling the truth, we can recover the ledger and the recording before Graham knows we've found them," he said. "Then you can decide what charges she deserves."
Celeste gave them a key and a time: midnight, when the private security patrol changed shifts.
Elara looked at the key in Julian's palm. "If this is a trap, we walk into it together."
"No," Julian said. "We bring Renee and backup. We don't make ourselves easy targets."
"One more thing," she said. "Lydia isn't the person Graham fears. Your father left something else in that hall. Something that proves who ordered the crash."

"Who?"
"Your mother."
