Chapter 7 - The Name on the Test

Renee slid into the booth opposite Julian and looked at Elara.

"You were the auditor who disappeared," she said. "The case file says you took two million dollars and fled before charges were filed."

"The case file was written by Graham Pike's legal team," Elara replied. "They used my signature on transfers I never approved."

Renee opened a notebook. "I believe you. But belief isn't evidence, and the original investigation was shut down before my office could subpoena the bank records. If you want this reopened, we need documents that survive a judge."

Julian placed his father's letter on the table. Renee read it without changing expression, but her fingers tightened at the line about Graham.

"This could be enough to get a warrant," she said. "Not enough to convict. The safe-deposit box matters. So does the trust document. And if the child is yours, her legal status changes everything."

"Can I ask something?" she said.

Renee smiled. "You can ask me anything."

"If my dad is rich, does that mean I have to stop eating pancakes for dinner?"

"Absolutely not," he said. "Pancakes are not a privilege. They're a human right."

Maisie considered this. "Then you might be okay."

The next morning, Julian arranged a private paternity test through an independent family clinic Renee trusted. Elara agreed, though she made him promise the results would not be used to demand custody or take Maisie away from her.

"I want to know the truth," he said. "I don't want to win a child like a court case."

After the samples were sealed, they drove to a rented house Renee had arranged under a different name. Julian made grilled cheese sandwiches while Maisie drew a family with three people and a giant teddy bear. She gave the man in the picture a crooked tie and drew the woman with a red pencil tucked behind her ear.

"You remembered that," Elara said softly.

"You used to do it at work," Maisie replied. "Mom says she did important things with red pencils."

Julian looked at Elara. "She did."

Renee called before the afternoon was over.

"The clinic says someone requested the test order under your name," she said. "They had no authority to do that. The sample is secure, but somebody knows you've tested the child."

Julian went to the window. A delivery van was parked across the street, engine running, driver watching the house.

"Get your people here," he said.

The van's side door slid open.

A man stepped out holding a camera with a long lens.
