Chapter 15 - The Founders Gala

When I entered with Sophie and Maya, the room changed.
Conversations stopped in waves.
Whitmore approached us near the ballroom doors.
His smile was perfect.
“Daniel. Sophie.”
Then he looked at Maya.
“You are not welcome here.”
I handed him our invitation.
“She is my guest.”
“You're making a serious mistake.”
“No. I made those already.”
We walked past him.
Half an hour later, Whitmore stepped onto the stage for his annual speech.
He spoke about integrity.
He spoke about opportunity.
He spoke about protecting children.
Maya's hands shook beside me.
Then he changed direction.
“Recently, our community has been targeted by false allegations from a former student facing personal instability.”
The room went still.
Sophie whispered, “He's talking about Maya.”
Whitmore continued. “We have compassion for troubled young people, but compassion cannot require surrendering truth.”
Maya stood.
I caught her wrist.
“Not yet.”
Whitmore displayed a slide showing school financial audits.
Clean.
Approved.
Manufactured.
Parents began nodding.
Then he made his final mistake.
“We will not allow an angry teenager and those manipulating her to tarnish this institution.”
Sophie pulled her hand from mine.
Before I knew what she was doing, she walked straight toward the stage.
“Sophie,” I hissed.
Too late.
She climbed the steps.
Whitmore stared at her.
My eight-year-old daughter took the microphone.
“My mom used to help here.”
No one moved.
“She knew Maya. And Maya didn't make me scared.”
Whitmore reached for the microphone.
Sophie stepped away from him.
“You did.”
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
My heart pounded.
Sophie looked at the crowd.
“Adults keep saying kids don't understand money. Maybe we don't. But we understand when people lie.”
Whitmore's face turned red.
I walked onto the stage.
Behind me, Evan signaled the audiovisual technician.
The giant screen went black.
Then Claire's face appeared.
The entire ballroom gasped.
“If you're watching this,” my dead wife said, “something happened before I could finish what I started.”
May you like
Whitmore lunged toward the control table.
Two investigators stepped into his path.
