Chapter 9 - The Day I Ran Into the School

Then I remember running through the front doors while a receptionist shouted my name.

Sophie was in Whitmore's office.

So was Briggs.

My daughter sat in a leather chair clutching her backpack to her chest.

Whitmore stood behind his desk.

“Dad!”

I moved between her and the two men.

“Why was her phone taken?”

Whitmore raised both hands. “Daniel, this is a misunderstanding.”

“Where is her phone?”

Briggs placed it on the desk.

“What was in the backpack?” I asked.

Sophie hugged it tighter.

Whitmore's expression changed. “School property may have been removed from an archived classroom collection.”

“My wife's property.”

“The materials were donated to Lakeview.”

Sophie suddenly said, “Mom wrote my name on the box.”

Whitmore looked at her.

I did not like the way he did it.

“Open the door,” I said.

No one moved.

“Now.”

Briggs opened it.

In the hallway, parents and staff had begun to gather.

I held out my hand to Sophie. She took it.

We walked out together.

In the car, she opened the backpack.

Inside was a small purple flash drive shaped like a key.

“I found it in a pencil cup,” she said. “Mrs. Clark let me look through Mom's volunteer stuff. Then Mr. Briggs came in.”

“How did you know it mattered?”

Sophie pointed to a label in Claire's handwriting.

M.B. - KEEP SAFE.

Maya went pale when she saw it.

“I've never seen that.”

At home, Evan plugged the drive into an isolated laptop.

There were photographs of ledgers, scanned emails, and a spreadsheet Claire had built herself.

Then we found a video file.

The date was three weeks before Claire's accident.

My wife's face appeared on the screen.

My knees nearly gave out.

Claire sat in the same study where I had found her notebook. Her hair was tied back. She looked tired.

“If you're watching this,” she said, “either I got brave enough to show Daniel, or something happened before I could.”

Sophie grabbed my hand.

Claire took a breath on the screen.

“This isn't just a school problem. Someone inside Harrison Capital is helping move the money.”

I heard Maya whisper, “Oh my God.”

May you like

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“And Daniel, if it's you watching this, please don't trust Nolan Price.”
