Chapter 16 - The Room Turned Against Him

Claire's voice filled the ballroom.

She described the missing scholarship money. The FuturePath transfers. The ghost students. The risk to Maya.

Whitmore shouted, “Turn this off! This is illegally obtained private material!”

Nobody listened.

On the screen, Claire said, “If Charles Whitmore claims this is a misunderstanding, ask him why six scholarship students exist only on spreadsheets.”

A woman near the front whispered, “Oh my God.”

Whitmore turned toward the exit.

Federal agents entered through both ballroom doors.

His wife began crying.

Then Priya Shah walked onto the stage.

She held certified copies of Lakeview's original ledgers.

“I was the controller who signed these reports,” she said into the microphone. “And I was ordered to alter them.”

Whitmore pointed at Maya.

“This girl broke into confidential systems!”

Maya stepped onto the stage.

She did not take the microphone immediately.

She looked at the crowd that had once applauded her science awards, then watched silently as she was pushed out of the same building.

Finally she said, “I was fifteen when my mom died.”

The room quieted.

“I slept in a shelter and still came to class because this school was the only normal thing I had left. Then I found numbers that didn't add up.”

Her voice shook.

“I thought if I showed adults the truth, adults would fix it.”

She looked directly at Whitmore.

“Instead, they called me a thief.”

Someone in the audience began to cry.

Maya continued. “You threw my books in the trash. You told teachers not to answer my emails. You sent security after me. And tonight you called me unstable because you thought being homeless made me easy to discredit.”

Whitmore shouted, “That's enough.”

Maya's voice hardened.

“No. You already decided when I'd had enough. You don't get to decide again.”

Applause began in the back.

Then spread.

Whitmore stared at the room in disbelief.

An agent approached him and quietly asked him to step aside.

He refused.

Briggs, standing near the service entrance, suddenly ran.

Evan saw him first.

“Stop him!”

Briggs shoved through a waiter and bolted into the hallway.

Maya's face changed.

“He has the backpack.”

I looked beside our table.

Her battered backpack was gone.
