Chapter 11 - Elena's Other Child

The child-sized footprints at the hospice led to a locked records room.
Inside, police found drawings taped to the wall.
Crayon suns.
A red house.
A woman with yellow hair.
And one name written over and over in careful block letters.
SOPHIE.
Mara saw the photograph and sat down hard.
"No."
"You know that name."
She covered her mouth.
"Elena volunteered at that hospice before Rosalyn was born. There was a little girl there. Sophie Dawson."
Dawson.
My chest tightened.
"Hilda's daughter?"
"Her niece."
Mara's eyes filled.
"Sophie had leukemia. Elena got close to her."
"What happened?"
"She died."
"When?"
"Three years ago."
One year before Elena.
Detective Ortiz pulled the hospice file.
Sophie had died after receiving medication from a shipment later linked to Dawson Clinical Services.
Counterfeit medication.
Hilda's own family operation may have killed her niece.
But the file contained something stranger.
Elena had discovered the shipment discrepancy while investigating Sophie's death.
She confronted Marcus Dawson.
Hilda was present.
"So this started before Elena's pregnancy," I said.
Mara nodded.
"Elena wasn't protecting a trust. She was building a case."
"Then why did Hilda stay close to her?"
"Maybe to find out what she knew."
Ortiz called from the hospice.
"We found a hidden safe."
Inside was a letter in Elena's handwriting addressed to Sophie's mother.
It had never been mailed.
I read the first line.
I am so sorry. I believe the medicine that failed Sophie was counterfeit, and I believe people connected to my husband's freight network helped move it.
My breath caught.
Not my company.
My freight network.
Elena had been trying to protect me while investigating a crime that used my trucks.
The letter continued.
I have not told Graham yet because I need proof. If I am wrong, I could destroy his company. If I am right, someone inside our home already knows I am looking.
Then came the line that changed everything.
Helena is not working for Marcus.
Marcus is afraid of her.
I looked at Mara.
"If Marcus wasn't controlling Hilda..."
May you like
She finished for me.
"Hilda was controlling Marcus."
