Chapter 8 - What Mercer Freight Carried

Mercer Freight moved everything from auto parts to hospital equipment across the Southeast.
Twenty-two thousand shipments a week.
My company had made me rich because I built systems that moved things quickly and predictably.
Until Hilda's call, I had never considered that those systems could hide crimes from me just as easily.
Calvin isolated shipments connected to Elena's family company.
Three years earlier, unusual medical cargo started moving through two subcontractors.
Invoices doubled back through shell vendors.
Temperature logs were falsified.
Containers were relabeled after leaving our Nashville depot.
"What was inside?" I asked.
"Hospital-grade medication," Calvin said. "Some real. Some counterfeit."
My stomach turned.
Daniel scanned the records.
"If Elena discovered this..."
"She would have shut it down."
Elena had chaired the family foundation's medical board.
She knew supply chains.
She knew exactly what counterfeit medicine could do.
Mara spoke from the doorway.
"She did discover it."
I looked at her.
"Elena asked me about patients reacting strangely to routine medication. She thought a batch had been switched."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"She planned to."
"When?"
"The night before she collapsed."
Calvin traced the subcontractor ownership.
One name appeared again and again.
Dawson Clinical Services.
Marcus Dawson.
Hilda's brother.
The room went quiet.
Elena's death was no longer an isolated mystery.
It sat at the center of a business crime.
Calvin opened one final record.
A shipment left our depot the morning Elena died.
Destination: Saint Catherine's Hospital.
Receiving physician: Dr. Marcus Dawson.
Cargo: emergency neurological medication.
Mara shook her head.
"Elena received treatment from that lot."
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
"You're sure?"
"I saw the box."
Daniel whispered, "Then the evidence may still exist in the hospital archives."
Calvin's phone buzzed.
He read the message and swore.
"What?" I asked.
"Someone just accessed Saint Catherine's evidence storage using a retired physician credential."
"Whose?"
He turned the screen toward me.
Dr. Marcus Dawson.
"And the security camera caught someone leaving with a sealed evidence case."
The image was grainy.

But I knew the woman.
Hilda.
