Chapter 3 - The Dinner That Never Arrived

Calvin sealed the nursery wing.
I carried Rosalyn downstairs while Mara carried Camille.
My youngest buried her face against a homeless stranger's neck as if she trusted her more than anyone in my house.
That truth hurt.
A pediatric emergency team arrived within twenty minutes.
Both girls were dehydrated.
Both were underweight.
The doctor pulled me aside.
"This did not happen over a weekend."
"How long?"
"Long enough that someone should have noticed."
I heard the accusation even though he never raised his voice.
I should have noticed.
I was their father.
While the doctor examined them, Calvin and I reviewed the hidden footage.
At 6:03 p.m., a cook prepared two small dinners.
At 6:19, Hilda carried them upstairs.
At 6:23, she stopped in the service pantry.
She scraped the food into a trash compactor.
Then she photographed the emptying plates from three angles, wiped the rims, and returned them to the nursery.
The girls received water.
Nothing else.
"This can't be the first time," Calvin said.
It wasn't.
Camera after camera showed the same routine.
Food prepared.
Food destroyed.
Photographs staged.
Reports filed.
Bills approved by me.
Then we found the medicine.
Every night at 8:30, Hilda mixed drops into watered-down juice.
"Can we identify it?" I asked.
Calvin paused the frame.
"Lab can."
A camera in the laundry hall caught Hilda slipping through a staff exit at 11:52.
She had not run after seeing the cameras.
She had already packed.
"She knew," I said.
"She knew you'd eventually check."
"Then why stay?"
Calvin looked at the screen.
"Maybe she needed you to discover one part of it."
Mara stood behind us.
"She did."
I turned.
"What does that mean?"
"Hilda never does one thing for one reason."
"You knew her?"
Mara laughed bitterly.
"I knew her before she became Hilda Dawson, perfect household manager."
"What was she?"
"Your wife's private nurse."
The room went silent.
I stared at Mara.
"No. Elena's nurse was--"
"Helena Dane."
My throat closed.
May you like
Mara nodded.
"Hilda changed her name after Elena died."
