Chapter 11 - The Wrong Badge

“Stay inside,” Emma told Lily. She lowered her window just enough to talk. “What is the charge?”

The officer, a broad man named Keene, said, “Abduction of a minor. Exit the truck.”

Daniel leaned across Emma. “That's my daughter. I'm her father.”

Keene barely glanced at him. “Sir, I have a signed custody order. The child is to be returned to her legal guardian.”

“Show it,” Emma said.

Keene raised a single sheet against the glass. Emma recognized her false signature and Victoria's lawyer's embossed seal. The ink wasn't even dry.

“That's forged,” she said. “A judge hasn't heard me.”

“Ma'am, out of the vehicle.”

Rosa quietly started recording on her phone. Lily reached for Emma's sleeve, eyes huge. Daniel opened his door, then closed it when Keene shifted his hand toward his weapon.

“Officer,” Daniel said, “my mother locked my child in a room and set the house on fire.”

Keene laughed once, without humor. “Rich families sure know how to tell stories.”

Emma's voice sounded calmer than she felt. Her knees were shaking beneath the steering wheel, and she was painfully aware that one wrong move could put Lily in the path of an armed officer. She kept both hands visible and spoke slowly, refusing to give Keene a scene he could twist into another lie.

Emma looked past him. A second car had stopped on the shoulder. Its headlights were off. She saw a familiar emerald dress through the passenger window.

Victoria had followed them.

Emma's voice went flat. “You came here for her, not for a judge.”

Keene's face changed. Just a flicker, but enough.

From the back seat, Lily whispered, “Mommy, the other policeman is here.”

“What other policeman?”

“The one Grandma gave money to. He took my picture.”

A siren sounded in the distance. Keene looked over his shoulder. Emma saw his indecision and made her choice.

She held the memory card against the glass. “This is evidence of an attempted kidnapping. Your body camera is recording, right?”

Keene reached down and switched his camera off.

Rosa said clearly, “I got that on video.”

A second cruiser stopped behind Keene. A woman stepped out and shouted, “Officer Keene, step away from that truck.”
