Chapter 15 - The Chapel at the End of the Road

Torres didn't let the family rush into a second trap. She sent deputies ahead and brought Emma only after officers reported the property secured. Snow covered the narrow road in white ridges. The chapel stood dark beneath bare oak trees, its stone walls silver in the moonlight.

Inside, the air smelled of dust, candle wax, and something freshly cleaned. Officers found a folding cot, a box of children's clothes, and a medical bag with unlabeled sedatives. The safe behind the altar was open and empty.

On the pew lay Daniel's wedding ring.

Emma recognized a scratch across its underside, made years ago when he'd been helping Lily build a backyard treehouse. Daniel picked it up with a trembling hand.

“Mother took it at dinner,” he said. “She said marriage made me soft. I told her to give it back.”

“And then?” Emma asked.

“I let her keep it.”

Daniel stood for a long time with the ring in his palm. He wanted its familiar weight to mean he could walk backward into the years before this night. But the scratch from Lily's treehouse was still there, and so was everything he had failed to protect since.

“Of course you did.”

A deputy called from the side room. Under a cracked floorboard they'd found bank-transfer receipts and a ledger filled with initials. It tracked payments to Keene, Merrick, an insurance inspector, and an administrator at St. Agnes.

Natalie thumbed through the pages. “There's enough here to prove the trust scheme.”

Torres pointed at a last entry, written that very afternoon: C.B. / 12:05 / FINAL SIGNATURE.

“Claire Bennett,” Natalie said. “My twin.”

Emma checked her phone. A missed call from Claire's number flashed on the screen, timestamped twelve minutes earlier. A voicemail played with labored breathing.

“My boys are safe,” Claire whispered. “But Victoria knows where I work. She says she'll give you Lily if I come alone. I know Lily is already safe. She's lying about something else.”

Behind Claire's voice, Emma heard a door close and a woman say, “Tell them about the original will.”
