Chapter 16 - The Original Will

At dawn, Torres brought an emergency team to St. Agnes, where Claire worked occasional night shifts. They found her car in the staff lot, its driver's window shattered. Security footage showed two men escorting her into a white service van. Claire was walking, but one held her tightly by the elbow.

Emma sat in the station with Lily leaning against her side while Torres explained the search. Every detail felt designed to make her helpless. Emma decided helplessness would not be another gift she gave Victoria.

She called Claire's husband, Thomas. He said Claire had kept a sealed packet in a bank deposit box in case anything went wrong. Natalie and Thomas retrieved it with Torres's authorization. Inside was a copy of the original grandfather's will and a handwritten codicil witnessed by two attorneys.

“The youngest grandchild's trust,” Thomas read, “shall be administered by an independent trustee until majority. No parent, grandparent, or spouse may serve as sole trustee.”

Daniel let out a long, hollow breath. “Mother could never get the money.”

Claire's husband had already explained the disappearance to their sons without inventing a soothing lie. Their mother was missing; people were working hard to bring her home; the boys were safe with him. Emma respected that honesty. Children could feel uncertainty without being forced to carry the adults' panic.

“She knew that,” Natalie said. “But if she could hide the codicil and replace it with a forged version, she could.”

The packet also held financial records showing money already siphoned from Natalie's old accounts. Emma called the federal fraud tip line while Torres brought in a prosecutor. For the first time, the case felt larger than one Christmas Eve.

Then the hospital administrator from the ledger was arrested. During questioning, he revealed that Victoria had promised to bring Claire to an abandoned family property beside the river. She wanted Claire's signature on a document falsely claiming the codicil was forged.

A text arrived on Emma's phone from Victoria's number: BRING MY SON. NO POLICE. OR CLAIRE GOES IN THE WATER.

Emma showed Torres immediately.

“I'm not going alone,” she said. “And neither is Daniel.”

Torres stared at the message. “We can make her think he is.”
