Chapter 18 - The Choice He Never Made Before

“Let her go,” Daniel said.
Merrick shoved Claire toward the edge of the porch. Her shoes slipped on ice. Victoria held out a pen, steady as a metronome.
“Your signature, Daniel. One last time.”
For years, he would have searched for a way to please her without making a scene. That instinct rose in him now; he felt it like an old sickness. He looked at Claire, at the frozen river, and remembered Lily's voice through the locked door.
“No,” he said.
Merrick raised the gun. Daniel dropped the envelope and threw himself sideways into a porch post, knocking over a metal lantern. The loud crash was Torres's signal. Floodlights snapped on. Officers shouted commands from the trees.
Merrick swung his gun toward the lights. Claire drove her heel into his foot and broke free. He stumbled, fired once into the roof overhang, and surrendered when three officers had clear sightlines. Nobody was struck.
Daniel heard the distant officers moving through the trees and knew the microphone would record every word. He didn't speak for the prosecutors or for Emma's forgiveness. He spoke because Lily had asked a simple question—why did Grandma get to scare her?—and his daughter deserved an answer different from silence.
Victoria ran for the dock. Daniel went after her, stopping just short as rotten boards cracked beneath her feet.
“Mother, it's over.”
She stood at the far end, the river black under the ice. “You think she will take you back after this?”
“That's Emma's decision.”
“You'd lose everything for her?”
“I already lost everything that mattered when I listened to you.”
Victoria stepped backward. The dock gave way under one foot, and she dropped to her knees. Daniel reached out, but she slapped his hand away. Torres and a deputy moved in from the shore and pulled her onto solid ground before the boards collapsed.
Handcuffs clicked. For once, Victoria had no order left that anybody would obey.

Then Torres's radio came alive. “Detective, we've found a second set of documents in the river house basement. You need to see these.”
