Chapter 1 - Give Him to Me

“Give him to me.”
Vanessa Hale did not raise her voice. She did not have to.
The words cracked across the bright living room like a glass breaking.
Three-year-old Noah flinched in Rosa Martinez’s arms and buried his wet face against the housekeeper’s shoulder. His tiny fists twisted into the blue fabric of her uniform so hard his knuckles turned white.
“No!” he screamed.
Vanessa froze.
Behind her, Daniel Hale stopped halfway into the room, one hand still on the doorway. He had come home early because Vanessa said Noah was “being difficult.” He had expected a tantrum, maybe a broken vase, maybe a fight over lunch.
He had not expected to see his son shaking like someone had pulled him out of a burning house.
“Rosa,” Vanessa said, forcing a smile that did not reach her eyes. “Put him down. Now.”
Rosa’s face had gone pale. “Mr. Hale, I can explain.”
“Noah,” Daniel said carefully. “Buddy, come to Dad.”
Noah looked over Rosa’s shoulder.
For one second, relief flashed in his eyes.
Then Vanessa took one step forward.
Noah screamed again.
“Don’t let her take me!”
The room went dead silent.
Daniel stared at his son.
Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Rosa tightened her hold on the child. “Sir, please. Don’t make him go with her right now.”
Vanessa turned sharply. “You work for us. You do not tell us what to do with our child.”
“Our child?” Daniel repeated.
Vanessa looked at him. “You know what I mean.”
Daniel’s eyes moved to Noah’s arm. The sleeve of his cream sweater had slid up.
Four faint purple marks ringed the boy’s wrist.
Finger marks.
Daniel crossed the room in two steps.
“What happened to his arm?”
Vanessa answered too fast. “He grabbed the stair rail and slipped.”
Rosa said nothing.
Daniel looked at her.
“Rosa.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Noah pressed his face deeper into her neck and whispered something so quietly Daniel almost missed it.
“She locked the door again.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“What door?”
May you like
Vanessa went completely still.
And Rosa whispered, “The one upstairs.”
