Chapter 17 - Vanessa's Story

Vanessa’s statement was brilliant.

That was what made it dangerous.

She claimed Daniel knew about Rosa from the beginning. She said he arranged the illegal fertility procedure because he wanted a biological child at any cost. She claimed Marcus helped Daniel move money offshore and that she had only recently discovered the fraud.

Then she said Daniel became violent when she threatened to expose him.

“She has photographs,” Rachel said.

Daniel stared. “Of what?”

“Bruises on her arm.”

“I never touched her.”

“I know.”

“How old are the pictures?”

“Metadata says last month.”

Daniel remembered Vanessa wearing long sleeves during a heat wave.

A setup.

Rosa sat beside him with her arm bandaged.

“What happens now?”

“Daniel cooperates,” Rachel said. “Completely.”

He did.

He turned over financial records, phones, emails, travel history, everything.

For two brutal days, the story hung in the balance.

News vans gathered outside the gate. Headlines called it a billionaire family scandal. Commentators used words like secret surrogate, missing millions, abused child.

Noah’s name was protected legally, but strangers online invented details anyway.

Daniel shut off every screen in the house.

On the third night, Rosa found him in the kitchen at 2:00 a.m.

“You need sleep.”

“So do you.”

“I tried.”

He looked at her bandage. “Does it hurt?”

“Less than yesterday.”

They sat in silence.

Then Daniel said, “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not seeing what she was doing to him.”

Rosa looked toward the hallway. “People who hurt children rarely do it where someone can see.”

“I should have.”

“You’re seeing now.”

His eyes burned.

“I almost lost him.”

Rosa’s voice softened. “So did I.”

That was the first time they allowed the truth to sit between them without fear.

Then Rachel called.

“Daniel, we found something.”

“What?”

“A backup from the nursery camera.”

He stood.

“Where?”

“Cloud archive. Marcus deleted the main account but missed a mirrored storage server.”

Daniel’s pulse jumped.

Rachel continued.

“There’s footage from last month.”

“Of Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“And Marcus.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What are they doing?”

May you like

Rachel took a breath.

“They’re rehearsing her bruises.”
