Chapter 13 - The Second Ledger

Rachel moved fast.
The call had lasted thirty-nine seconds, too short for a clean location, but long enough for investigators to narrow it to an industrial area south of Chicago.
Daniel’s company audit moved even faster.
By noon, the CFO found twenty-three suspicious transfers totaling more than forty-six million dollars.
All approved through legal entities Marcus controlled.
“Why didn’t anyone catch this?” Daniel asked.
The CFO looked ashamed. “Because every transfer carried your authorization code.”
“I never approved them.”
“We know that now.”
Rachel leaned back. “Marcus didn’t just steal money. He built evidence that you stole it.”
Daniel went cold.
If Marcus disappeared, Daniel would be left holding the fraud trail.
Rosa entered the study holding a folded sheet of paper.
“I found this in Noah’s jacket.”
Daniel took it.
It was covered in childish crayon lines, but beneath them was something printed in small type.
A bank routing number.
Rachel stood immediately.
“Where did he get this?”
Rosa called Noah into the room.
“Sweetheart, where did this paper come from?”
Noah pointed toward the front of the house.
“Bad man.”
“Marcus?” Daniel asked.
The boy nodded.
“When?”
“At night.”
Daniel crouched. “Did he give it to you?”
Noah shook his head. “Fell down.”
“From where?”
“His pocket.”
Rachel typed the number into her laptop through a secure banking lookup.
“It’s not the fake Rosa account.”
“What is it?”
“An offshore intermediary.”
Daniel stared at the page.
A three-year-old had accidentally carried out evidence Marcus had probably been searching for.
Then Noah added, “He had Mommy paper too.”
Daniel looked at him. “What mommy paper?”
Noah ran to the playroom and returned with a small red book.
Inside the cover was a photograph of Vanessa and Marcus standing beside a black car.
On the back, someone had written a date.
Four years earlier.
Six months before Noah’s birth.
Rosa looked at Daniel.
Daniel flipped the picture over again.
There was a second note in Vanessa’s handwriting.
M - once D signs the amended trust, we are free.
Rachel exhaled slowly.
“Daniel.”
He already knew.
“This was never just an affair.”
May you like
Rachel nodded.
“It was a plan.”
