Chapter 14 - The Trust

Daniel had signed the amended family trust three weeks before Noah was born.

He remembered the day because Vanessa had cried afterward and told him it proved he believed in their family.

Under the amendment, if Daniel died before Noah turned eighteen, Vanessa would control the family assets as trustee.

Marcus had drafted the paperwork.

Rachel read the document twice.

Then she found the clause.

“If Noah were declared not to be Daniel’s lawful child,” she said, “Vanessa would still retain temporary control during any inheritance dispute.”

Daniel stared at her. “So what? They planned to expose the surrogacy?”

“Maybe eventually.”

Rosa looked sick. “After Daniel died?”

No one answered.

Daniel walked to the window.

Outside, Noah was blowing bubbles with a caseworker on the terrace. He laughed when one landed on his sleeve.

The sound hurt.

For years Daniel had thought danger looked like competitors, lawsuits, hostile takeovers.

He had invited the real danger into his house.

His phone rang.

The detective.

They had located the warehouse where Vanessa’s call likely originated.

Police were entering.

Daniel listened in silence.

Then the detective swore.

“What happened?”

“Place is empty.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“There’s blood.”

His eyes opened.

“Whose?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Rosa heard and covered her mouth.

Rachel motioned for calm.

The detective continued. “We found a chair, rope, and Vanessa Hale’s bracelet.”

Daniel gripped the phone tighter.

“Anything else?”

“A printed map of your house.”

Daniel turned toward the terrace.

Noah was still outside.

“Get him inside,” Daniel snapped.

Rosa ran.

The detective’s voice sharpened. “Daniel, there’s more. The map has a time written on it.”

“What time?”

“2:30 p.m.”

Daniel looked at the clock.

2:17.

Then the front gate alarm went off.
