Chapter 1 - The Mud on Her Dress

Ethan Cole came home two days early and found his eight-year-old daughter dragging a garbage bag that looked almost as heavy as she was.

The rain had turned the back garden into brown soup. Isabella's yellow dress was torn at the knee. Mud covered her bare calves. Both hands were red and blistered around the black plastic knot.

"Bella?"

She froze.

Not the way a child freezes when caught making a mess. She froze like someone had heard a gun cock behind them.

The back door opened.

Beatriz stepped onto the patio in a cream sweater, perfectly dry, a coffee mug in one hand.

"Keep moving," she said.

Then she saw Ethan.

The mug nearly slipped from her fingers.

"You're home."

Ethan dropped his suitcase in the grass. "What is she doing?"

Beatriz recovered quickly. "Helping me clean the garden. She threw a fit this morning, so I gave her a chore."

"A chore?" Ethan walked to Isabella and took the bag from her. It was packed with wet leaves, broken flowerpots, and chunks of dirt. "This weighs thirty pounds."

"She's stronger than she looks."

Isabella stared at the ground.

Ethan crouched. "Sweetheart, look at me."

Slowly, she lifted her face.

He had spent four months traveling between Denver and Chicago for a hospital design project. Every video call had shown the same neat bedroom, the same brushed hair, the same polite smile. He had told himself she was healing after losing her mother. He had told himself Beatriz was helping.

Now he saw the dark circles under Isabella's eyes.

"What happened to your hands?"

"Nothing."

"Did you fall?"

Her eyes flicked toward Beatriz.

That tiny movement hit Ethan harder than a shout.

Beatriz stepped closer. "She's being dramatic. Isabella, go wash up."

Isabella didn't move.

Ethan held out his hand. "Come inside with me."

The little girl took one step, then stopped.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Please don't be angry with her."

Ethan felt something cold move through his chest.

"Why would I be angry?"

Isabella swallowed. She looked at Beatriz again.

"Because she'll know if I tell you."

For one long second, even the rain seemed quiet.

Then Ethan noticed a purple mark disappearing beneath the cuff of his daughter's sleeve.

And Beatriz noticed him noticing it.
