Chapter 18 - The Burning Boathouse

Ethan reached the boathouse before the deputies.
Flames crawled up one wall, feeding on old paint and dry timber. Smoke rolled under the roof.
Beatriz stood near the dock, trapped between the fire and the water.
A metal fuel can burned beside the doorway.
"Don't come closer!" she screamed.
Ethan stopped.
"Where's the gun?"
She looked at the lake.
Ortiz came up behind him, weapon ready.
"Beatriz, show me your hands."
Beatriz raised them slowly.
Empty.
The gun lay on the dock several feet away.
"I didn't mean for this," she said.
Ethan stared at her. "Which part? The forgery? The shed? Taking Isabella?"
"I wanted a family."
"You wanted obedience."
Her face folded. "She hated me."
"She was eight."
"She looked at me like I was stealing her mother's place."
"So you punished her for missing her mom?"
"I tried everything! I cooked, I helped with homework, I made that house perfect, and she still cried for Sofia!"
Ethan's voice went quiet. "You were jealous of a grieving child."
Beatriz flinched as if he had struck her.
The roof groaned.
Ortiz shouted, "We need to move!"
A burning beam crashed behind Beatriz, cutting off the dock.
She screamed.
Ethan saw panic replace anger.
For one terrible second he thought about the shed. The garbage bags. The fake voice telling Isabella she was bad.
Then he grabbed a boat hook, leaned across the burning gap, and shouted, "Take it!"
Beatriz stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because my daughter is never going to learn that we leave people to burn when we're angry. Take it!"
She grabbed the hook.
Ethan and a deputy pulled her across as another section of roof collapsed.
Ortiz cuffed her on the wet grass.
Beatriz looked toward the greenhouse where Isabella waited with another officer.
"Can I say goodbye?"
"No," Ethan said.
For once, the word required no explanation.
Two weeks later, Martin Vale was charged with fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and evidence tampering. Javier agreed to cooperate. Dr. Morrow surrendered his license pending prosecution and admitted fabricating records.
Beatriz faced additional charges for unlawful restraint, child endangerment, forgery, and kidnapping.
Ethan thought the worst was over.
Then his attorney called.
"Beatriz is contesting the protective order," she said. "Her lawyer is arguing you were the negligent parent who created the conditions for all of this."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Can she win?"
"Probably not. But the court will hear evidence."
"Does Isabella have to be there?"
May you like
A pause.
"The judge wants to hear from her."
