Chapter 19 - The Girl Who Spoke

The courthouse did not look like a place where children's lives should be decided.

Everything was hard: marble floors, wooden benches, metal detectors, adult voices lowered into serious whispers.

Isabella did not sit in the courtroom.

A child advocate arranged for her to speak from a smaller room by video, with a therapist beside her and no direct view of Beatriz.

Ethan watched the screen with his hands locked together.

Beatriz's attorney began gently.

"Isabella, did your father travel often?"

"Yes."

"Did that make you sad?"

"Yes."

Ethan swallowed.

"Did your father know Beatriz gave you chores?"

"He knew I had chores."

"So sometimes Beatriz was following rules your father approved?"

Isabella looked confused.

"She said he approved them."

"And you heard his voice telling you to obey her, correct?"

"Yes."

The attorney turned slightly, as if the answer helped.

Then Isabella added, "But it wasn't really him."

The room became still.

"How do you know that?"

"Because Dad says sorry when he hurts somebody's feelings. The voice never said sorry."

Ethan looked down.

The child advocate asked her what happened in the shed.

Isabella described the mattress, the locked door, the chalk marks. She described dragging garbage bags until her hands blistered. She described being told that crying meant she was manipulating people.

Then she said the sentence that made Beatriz cover her face.

"She didn't just make me scared of her. She made me scared of Dad."

The judge leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell your father when he called?"

Isabella thought for a long moment.

"Because she stood behind the phone."

No one moved.

"And when she wasn't there?"

"I thought the cameras were."

The judge removed her glasses.

By the end of the hearing, the protective order was extended. Beatriz was barred from contact. The court referred the forged filings for additional criminal investigation. The trust was frozen and placed under an independent fiduciary until every stolen dollar could be traced.

Outside, reporters waited on the courthouse steps because Martin's arrest had made the case public.

Ethan took Isabella through a private exit.

In the car, she said nothing for ten minutes.

Then she looked at him.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Can I ask you something and you can't lie?"

His chest tightened.

"Okay."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Why didn't you see me?"
