Chapter 10 - The Ledger

Emma was back in Daniel's arms by 6:42 a.m.

He held her so tightly the paramedic had to remind him she needed room to breathe.

Rachel buried her face against Emma's blanket and sobbed.

For thirty seconds, the world narrowed to the three of them.

Then Daniel remembered the rifle shots.

Thomas escaped through the woods.

Again.

Evelyn was taken into protective custody. Margaret was detained for questioning about Richard's death.

Daniel refused to leave the station until Emma had been examined. The pediatrician found no injuries, only mild dehydration.

The blood, the photograph, the staged ring—everything had been theater designed to force old secrets into daylight.

But the kidnapping itself was real.

And Evelyn insisted Thomas had ordered it.

"Why?" Daniel asked her through the interview-room glass.

Evelyn looked exhausted. "Because Richard kept records. Thomas believes you have them."

"Records of what?"

"Illegal adoptions. Bribes. Babies moved across state lines. Some mothers were told their children died. Some couples paid cash. Richard wasn't just desperate for a son. He discovered a business."

Daniel felt physically ill.

"My father trafficked babies?"

"I don't know how many. Michael believed at least twelve."

Ortiz asked, "Where is the ledger?"

"Richard hid it before he died."

"Why would Thomas think Daniel has it?"

Evelyn looked at Daniel. "Because Richard left clues in family things. Photos. jewelry. property records. He trusted Daniel more than anyone."

Daniel almost laughed.

Trusted him.

The man had built Daniel's entire life on a crime.

A detective brought in Richard's old lockbox contents.

Daniel picked up the wedding ring again.

E.V. October 14, 1997.

"This belonged to Evelyn?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Michael gave it to me before Daniel was born. It wasn't a wedding ring. It was a promise ring."

Daniel turned it in his fingers.

Inside the band, below the engraving, was a tiny scratch he'd never noticed.

Not a scratch.

A number.

314.

Ortiz frowned. "A safe deposit box?"

Daniel remembered something.

When Richard died, he'd left Daniel a key among his personal effects. Daniel had assumed it belonged to an old storage unit and tossed it into a desk drawer.

He ran home with Ortiz.

The key was still there.

Stamped on one side: LGB TRUST.

Box 314.

They reached the bank just after opening.

Inside the safe deposit box sat a thick black notebook, a flash drive, and one sealed envelope addressed to DANIEL.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Son,

If you're reading this, then the past has found you.

Daniel stopped.

Rachel touched his shoulder.

He continued.

Do not give the ledger to Thomas. Do not give it to Evelyn either. One of them is lying about what happened to Michael.

Daniel looked up.

Evelyn had blamed Thomas.

But Richard's letter ended with one final line.

The person who killed Michael Reed is the same person who has protected you your entire life.
