Chapter 16 - The House on Fire

Daniel's house was burning before the first engine arrived.
Flames pushed through the upstairs nursery window, swallowing the curtains where Emma had slept.
Daniel stood behind the police line with Rachel and watched firefighters tear into the roof.
"She knew exactly what room to burn," Rachel said.
Daniel's jaw clenched. "She's destroying evidence."
Ortiz disagreed. "She's making a statement."
Thomas, handcuffed in a squad car, started shouting through the open window.
"Check the basement!"
Daniel turned.
"What?"
"Richard hid duplicates. Behind the furnace wall. Evelyn knows."
Ortiz sent firefighters down.
They found a fireproof safe built into the concrete.
Inside were four hard drives and a small video camera.
One hard drive still worked.
The files contained home videos Daniel had never seen.
The first showed Richard sitting in his study five years earlier, speaking directly to the camera.
"Daniel, if this reaches you, then I failed."
Daniel watched without blinking.
Richard looked tired, frightened, human in a way Daniel had never remembered him.
"I told myself I rescued you. That is how cowards rename crimes. I paid Thomas. I lied to Margaret. I helped move children for people who paid me because once I had crossed the line for you, every next line became easier."
Margaret covered her face.
Richard continued.
"Michael Reed found me. He did not threaten Daniel. He wanted his son to know the truth. I should have let him."
Daniel's eyes burned.
"Thomas attacked Michael in my car. I tried to stop him. Michael survived the stabbing long enough to leave the vehicle. I do not know what happened after that."
Ortiz paused the video.
"Then Michael may not have died that night."
Thomas shouted from behind the glass. "He didn't!"
Everyone turned.
"You told Evelyn he did," Daniel said.
Thomas looked ashamed. "I thought he did. Later I learned someone picked him up off the highway."
"Who?"
Thomas shook his head.
Richard's video resumed.
"There is one person I trusted with Daniel's safety after that night. If Thomas comes for him, find Samuel Price."
Daniel frowned.
He knew that name.
Sam Price had been his father's oldest friend. The quiet man who came to every Christmas dinner, taught Daniel to fish, and disappeared after Richard's funeral.
Rachel whispered, "Where is he now?"
Ortiz searched the system.
Samuel Price, age sixty-one.
No current address.
Last known employer: a private ambulance company.
Then Daniel remembered the man outside Rachel's window.
Sandy hair gone gray.
The man Rachel thought was Michael.
Daniel looked at the paused image of Richard.
"What if Sam wasn't protecting me from Thomas?"
Ortiz looked at him.
May you like
Daniel's pulse climbed.
"What if Sam Price is Michael Reed?"
