Chapter 6 - The Man Outside the Window

Rachel finally told the whole truth.
Two weeks earlier, while Daniel was in Chicago, she had carried Emma into the kitchen at 2 a.m. and seen a man standing across the street beneath a dead streetlight.
He didn't move when she noticed him.
He simply lifted one hand.
Not a wave.
A signal.
The next morning, an envelope appeared under the windshield wiper of Rachel's car.
Inside was a copy of Daniel's original birth certificate and a note.
YOUR HUSBAND WAS STOLEN. ASK THOMAS VALE WHO PAID FOR HIM.
Rachel had assumed Thomas sent it. She contacted him using the number written on the back.
"You met Thomas because a mysterious note told you to?" Daniel asked.
"I didn't know what else to do."
"You could have told me."
"And say what? 'Hey, somebody thinks your dead father bought you as a baby'?"
"Yes. Exactly that."
Rachel looked away.
Ortiz interrupted. "Where did you meet Thomas?"
"A diner near the airport."
"Did he admit taking Daniel?"
"He admitted arranging it. But he blamed Richard. He said Richard wanted a child and wouldn't take no for an answer."
Margaret's face tightened. "Thomas lies when breathing."
"He also said Evelyn was alive," Rachel continued. "He said she had been hiding because Richard threatened her."
Daniel looked at Margaret. "Did Dad threaten her?"
"I never saw it."
"That's not what I asked."
Margaret pressed her lips together. "Richard was capable of things I didn't know until much later."
"How much later?"
"The week before he died."
Ortiz leaned forward. "What did he tell you?"
Margaret's eyes dropped.
"That Michael Reed came back."
Daniel's pulse kicked.
"Alive?"
"Yes. Richard said Michael had proof of what happened in 1997. He wanted money and access to Daniel."
"Access to me? I was twenty-four. He could have called."
"Richard said Michael was dangerous."
Daniel slammed his hand against the table. "You keep telling me what Richard said like he was God. He lied to you for decades."
Margaret finally snapped.
"I know!"
The room fell silent.
She wiped tears angrily from her cheeks.
"I know what I allowed. I know what I ignored. You think I haven't replayed every choice? I loved you from the second they put you in my arms. That love made me selfish. I told myself keeping you was protecting you because the alternative was admitting I had stolen someone else's son."
Daniel looked away.
Her honesty hurt worse than the excuses.
Ortiz's phone rang.
She listened, then stood.
"We have the DNA result from Richard's SUV."
Daniel's chest tightened.
"Who?"
"Michael Reed."
Rachel whispered, "So Richard killed him?"
Ortiz shook her head.
"No. The sample isn't from 1997. Lab dates it much later. Approximately five years old."
The year Richard died.
Then Ortiz added, "And there's something else. Michael Reed's fingerprints were found inside the SUV."
Daniel stared at her.
"That means he was there."
"Yes."
"Alive?"
May you like
Ortiz's expression hardened.
"The prints were in blood."
