Chapter 19 - What Evelyn Started

Evelyn's face went empty.
"Thomas, put the gun down."
"Tell him."
"This isn't the time."
Daniel almost laughed at the familiar sentence.
"No," he said. "It is always the time now."
Thomas kept the pistol trained on Michael.
"Evelyn worked at St. Matthew's records office. She found out how easy it was to alter newborn paperwork. At first she helped one desperate woman hide a baby from an abusive husband. Then someone offered money."
Evelyn snapped, "I never sold children."
"You sold records," Thomas said. "You connected people. Richard learned from you."
Daniel looked at her. "Is that true?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"I told myself the babies were going to good homes."
Daniel's voice hardened. "That's exactly what Margaret told herself."
Evelyn flinched.
Thomas laughed. "There it is. Everybody in this family is innocent inside their own story."
Michael struggled against the ties. "Thomas, you were the muscle. Don't act righteous."
"I know what I am."
Sirens sounded faintly outside.
Thomas's eyes flicked toward the window.
Evelyn moved.
Fast.
She knocked his gun arm sideways.
The shot blew plaster from the wall.
Daniel tackled Thomas.
They crashed into an old instrument cart. Metal trays scattered across the floor.
Michael kicked the gun away.
Evelyn dove for it.
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Stop!"
Thomas slammed Daniel from behind.
Michael, still tied, threw his weight sideways and knocked Thomas off balance.
The gun skidded beneath a cabinet.
Ortiz's team burst through the outer hall.
"Police! Hands where we can see them!"
Thomas raised his hands.
Evelyn did not.
She pulled a lighter from her pocket.
Only then did Daniel smell gasoline.
The file boxes.
The floor.
The curtains.
She had soaked the room.
"Evelyn," he said quietly.
Her thumb rested on the lighter wheel.
"If they take these files," she whispered, "everyone will know what I did."
Daniel stared at his biological mother.
"They should."
Her face broke.
"You don't understand."
"I understand exactly. You lost me because people thought their fear mattered more than the truth. Don't do it again."
Her thumb trembled.
Thomas suddenly lunged.
Evelyn struck the lighter.
Daniel hit her hand.
The flame fell onto the gasoline.
Fire raced across the floor.
Officers dragged Michael toward the door.
Daniel grabbed Evelyn.
She fought him.
"Leave me!"
"No."
"Why?"
Smoke rolled across the ceiling.
Daniel pulled her toward the exit.
"Because I'm done letting this family decide who gets to disappear."
They reached the corridor as part of the nursery ceiling collapsed behind them.
Outside, paramedics rushed forward.
Thomas was in cuffs.
Evelyn was alive.
Michael was alive.
Daniel looked around for Rachel.
She wasn't there.
Ortiz checked her phone.
Her face changed.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"Rachel just called 911 from your mother's house."
His stomach dropped.
"Why?"
May you like
Ortiz looked at him.
"Margaret has Emma. And she left a note saying she's taking her somewhere no one can find them."
