Chapter 10 - My Father’s Letter

David’s sentence was technically true.
That was how he built his best lies.
My father had created overseas entities years earlier for an international expansion.
They were legal, disclosed, and later closed.
David reused the structure.
He turned an old business tool into camouflage.
Then I found something my father had written nine years earlier.
David,
I am concerned by your effort to isolate Maya from decisions involving her shares. Her ownership is real. If you attempt to dilute, encumber, or transfer her interest without informed consent, I will intervene.
Henry Morgan
Behind it was a handwritten note.
David resents that Maya’s ownership cannot be controlled through marriage.
I cried because my father had seen the thing I spent years denying.
That same week, investigators found another recording.
David and Frank.
Six months earlier.
They discussed a “medical event” that could make me temporarily unable to vote my company shares.
My stomach turned.
“What medical event?”
Price answered carefully.
“They appear to have planned to trigger one of your panic attacks during a board crisis.”
No poison.
No physical attack.
Just anonymous threats involving Lily’s school account, a staged financial emergency, and documents ready to declare me temporarily incapacitated.
I felt almost relieved by how ordinary the evil was.
“He was going to use Lily to break me.”
Price said nothing.
The audio became part of the conspiracy case.
For me, it became proof that I had not imagined everything.
Four days later, David’s attorneys argued for release.
I sat in the courtroom while they called him a respected businessman and father.
Father.
The word burned.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
One yelled, “Mrs. Vance, do you blame him for your daughter’s death?”
Rachel whispered, “Keep walking.”
I stopped.
“No.”
The cameras went quiet.
“Meningitis killed Lily. Doctors fought for her. David did not cause the infection.”
Microphones lifted.
“But he heard his sick daughter ask him to come home, and he chose not to. That is something he has to live with.”
I walked away.
That evening, Julianne’s lawyer called.
Julianne wanted to meet.
May you like
She had property to return.
And she claimed Lily had sent David one more message I had never heard.
