Chapter 3 - The Exit Plan

Frank left when he heard I had called 911.
He claimed the office lock “stuck.”
It had never stuck in eleven years.
The police could not arrest him for standing in my hallway with a valid security code, but Rachel refused to let me stay in the house.
I packed one suitcase.
Lily’s.
Her rabbit. Her favorite sweater. Three books. Her blue birthday dress.
Then I packed the BMH documents.
By morning, Thomas had traced Blue Meridian to a Delaware shell company linked to a corporate cloud account David had forgotten I could still access.
Rachel made me verify my authorization twice before we opened anything.
Then we found a folder called PERSONAL STRATEGY.
The first file was a list of offshore accounts.
The second was a spreadsheet of transfers.
The third was called EXIT PLAN.
I read it twice.
Week 1: transfer liquid assets.
Week 2: trigger board vote.
Week 3: marital separation.
Week 4: relocate principal residence.
Rachel looked at me. “He was preparing to strip the company before leaving you.”
Thomas opened a message archive.
Julianne: We’re almost free.
David: Once Maya signs the refinancing papers, I can move the last eight million.
My stomach dropped.
Three weeks earlier, David had placed papers beside my coffee while I helped Lily study spelling.
“Routine bank renewal,” he had said.
I signed where he pointed.
The bank sent copies that afternoon.
The papers pledged our estate and my company shares as collateral for a twelve-million-dollar credit facility.
Three pages had been inserted after my signature.
Funds drawn: $11.6 million.
Destination: Blue Meridian.
Rachel’s face hardened.
“Did you sign the transfer authorization?”
“No.”
Thomas turned his laptop toward me.
There was my signature.
Perfect.
But the timestamp was 3:42 p.m. Tuesday.
At 3:42 p.m. Tuesday, I was in Lily’s ICU room.
Rachel stood.
“This is no longer just family court.”
At 5:00 p.m., she contacted a former federal prosecutor.
At 5:18, my phone buzzed.
David.
Hope you’re enjoying the quiet. I finally am.
Attached was a yacht photo.
He was smiling beside Julianne.
Behind them, on a table next to champagne, sat a black leather folder stamped with two gold letters.
BM.
Blue Meridian.

David had taken part of his secret life on vacation with him.
And now federal investigators wanted to know what was inside.
