Chapter 4 - Played

Special Agent Aaron Price from the FBI and Special Agent Nina Patel from IRS Criminal Investigation met us the next evening.
They promised nothing.
They asked everything.
Had I authorized Blue Meridian?
Had I received money from it?
Did I know about the offshore accounts?
Had David ever discussed moving company assets?
I answered until my throat hurt.
Then Patel asked, “Were there accounts in your daughter’s name?”
I told her about the education trust and medical reserve.
She looked up.
“How old is your daughter?”
“Seven.”
“And where is she now?”
My voice almost failed.
“She died four days ago.”
The room went quiet.
That night, I opened Lily’s tablet because I could not sleep.
Twenty-three unread messages appeared in a family chat.
Voice notes.
To David.
“Daddy, Mommy says I’m brave.”
“Daddy, I got Jell-O.”
“Daddy, can you call?”
Then the last one.
Her voice was weak.
“Daddy, I don’t feel good. Mommy is crying when she thinks I’m asleep.”
A pause.
“I love you. Please come home.”
Under the message was one word.
Played.
I stared at it.
David had heard her.
Not me.
Her.
He heard his seven-year-old daughter ask him to come home, and he stayed on the yacht.
I sent the screenshot to Rachel.
She called immediately.
“Maya, don’t contact him.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Good.”
“I want him to come home exactly as planned.”
Rachel was silent.
I continued, “I want him to walk into the truth.”
The next morning, federal agents entered Vance Strategic Logistics with warrants.
Employees watched boxes of records leave the building.
Frank Delaney disappeared before agents arrived.
Then Thomas found another document.
A five-million-dollar life insurance policy on Lily.
Beneficiary: Northstar Children’s Medical Foundation.
A charity David and I had created for families with sick kids.
I had never known the policy existed.
Thomas’s voice became careful.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“The coverage was increased twelve days before Lily got sick.”
I closed my eyes.
I knew meningitis killed my daughter.
I knew David did not cause the infection.
May you like
But five million dollars had been placed on her life.
And the charity listed as beneficiary was connected to Blue Meridian.
