Chapter 10 - The Door Under the Pumping House

The pumping house stood on the shore of an artificial lake, its broken windows staring over black water. Olivia arrived with Ben and Maya before sunset, using a service entrance that hadn't appeared on the base map for decades.
“Why didn't you tell me about the key?” Olivia asked.
“Because I promised Mara I would wait until you could make this choice yourself.”
“That's not an answer.”
“It's the only one I've got.”
They found Marker Seven bolted to a maintenance hatch beneath a rusted pump. The brass key fit. A narrow stairway descended into concrete darkness.
Maya swept her flashlight across old equipment and rows of filing cabinets. Most were empty. One steel door carried fresh fingerprints near its lock.
“Someone's been here,” she whispered.
Beyond the door lay a small room with a camp bed, medical supplies, and a faded photograph of Olivia at twelve. Her throat closed.
“Mom?”
A woman emerged from the shadows. White-haired, thinner than Olivia remembered, but alive. Ellen Reed stood with one hand on the wall as if the world could tilt beneath her.
“Livvy,” she breathed.
Olivia reached her in three steps. They held each other so tightly Ellen winced. “I saw you die,” Olivia whispered. “I stood at your funeral.”
“I know. I'm sorry.”
Ellen explained between broken breaths: two years earlier, investigators had discovered her connection to Nightglass. The woman publicly buried as Ellen had been a patient with no identified family, a substitution arranged by a corrupt official. Ellen had been kept hidden and threatened whenever Olivia appeared in public.
“I sent the recording when I heard you joined Fort Arden,” Ellen said. “They made me say what they wanted, but I put the warning in.”
“About Hale.”
“He made a mistake, sweetheart. It wasn't the same as betrayal.”
A sound echoed from the stairs. Maya moved to the door. Ben drew Ellen behind an equipment rack.
Voss stepped into the doorway, holding his hands wide and smiling.
“Wonderful,” he said. “Now that the family's together, we can finish this.”
