Chapter 8 - The Recording That Condemned Her

Ben shut off the recording. “You never said that.”
“I know.” Olivia stared at the screen. “I was unconscious at 02:17. Mara was keeping pressure on my leg.”
Maya examined the file information. The audio had been exported and compressed years after Nightglass. Somebody wanted the voice to sound authentic while erasing its history.
“There's more,” she said.
A second folder contained contracts, payments through shell corporations, and the names of civilians paid to look the other way. At the center of the network was an encrypted signature labeled SURVEYOR. The funds traced to a defense procurement program now under congressional review.
“Not just stolen codes,” Ben said. “They were selling access to emergency response networks.”
“And killing anyone who noticed,” Olivia replied.
She called Hale over an encrypted channel Maya verified independently. He listened to the falsified audio once, then asked to hear it again.
“I believed that voice,” he said softly.
“You believed the evidence they gave you.”
“I also wanted to believe the people above me weren't monsters.”
His honesty landed harder than any excuse.
Maya located a hidden file within the drive. It wasn't an audio recording. It was a list of six numbers paired with dates. The last date was tomorrow. Next to it were the letters F.A.
“Fort Arden?” Ben asked.
Maya checked the installation schedule. Tomorrow was an open-house ceremony for military families, hundreds of guests moving through the main gate and a demonstration of an emergency alert system.
“They could use that system to erase the theft,” she said, “or trigger a wider failure.”
Olivia read the final number twice. It matched the emergency access code printed in a manual on the conference-room shelf at Hale's office.
“We need to warn him.”
Maya's secure handset buzzed before she could dial. An automated notice had placed Hale on administrative leave pending a serious misconduct allegation. Voss, listed as acting commander, had assumed control of base security.
A photograph followed, taken minutes earlier. Hale sat handcuffed in his own office.
