Chapter 5 - Marker Seven

Emergency lighting washed the conference room red. Ben snatched his phone from the table. Hale reached for the wall alarm, but Olivia caught his wrist.

“Answer me first,” she said. “What happened at Marker Seven?”

“It's where I gave the order to turn back,” he said.

“You saw the distress flares.”

“I saw a storm moving in and a command message saying the extraction team had been compromised. I thought sending the helicopter forward would kill everyone.”

Olivia stepped closer. “Mara kept firing flares for forty minutes.”

“I know.” His face seemed to age. “I heard them on the radio.”

“And you left us.”

Hale didn't defend himself. “Yes.”

For a moment the only sound was the generator struggling into life. Ben opened the conference room door and found the corridor empty. An electrician shouted that the outage had come from a severed exterior cable, not the power company.

“They're inside,” Ben said.

Hale called the base commander from a hardwired desk phone and ordered a complete security sweep. Olivia demanded access to the original Nightglass incident files, not the redacted summaries. After a long hesitation, Hale opened a steel drawer and pushed a folder across the table.

The last page bore his signature authorizing a helicopter stand-down at 02:17. Beneath his name was a second authorization: NATIONAL OVERSIGHT DESK, E. KESSLER.

Olivia froze. “Eleanor Kessler?”

Hale nodded. “Deputy secretary's liaison. She told me our people were already safe.”

“She's the Surveyor.”

Ben shook his head. “We always thought the Surveyor was a man.”

“That was the point.” Olivia remembered a voice heard through a distortion filter and an expensive citrus scent that lingered at the abandoned station. She had smelled the same perfume at her mother's funeral on a woman who introduced herself as a grief counselor.

The desk phone rang. Hale answered on speaker.

A woman's pleasant voice said, “Colonel, your recovered soldier is making a terrible mistake.”

“Identify yourself,” Hale demanded.

“Tell Olivia her mother is alive. Then ask her what she's willing to trade to keep her that way.”
