Chapter 17 - The Lie on Every Screen

The press conference aired across the country. Robert Bell spoke in a calm, wounded voice about national security, forged evidence, and a troubled woman who had fooled decorated officers.

Olivia watched with a paper cup of coffee cooling between her hands.

“He's making me the story,” she said.

“Because the documents are making him the suspect,” Shaw replied.

But Bell had something more dangerous than a lie. He had an old video of Olivia, filmed during her captivity. She appeared exhausted, face bruised, reading a statement that she had given unauthorized communications access to foreign brokers.

“That's not a confession,” Ben said. “They kept her awake for days.”

“I know what it is,” Olivia answered. She remembered the room and the bright light that never switched off. She also remembered Mara telling her that survival wasn't surrender.

Bell played the video without context. Within minutes, strangers online were calling Olivia a traitor. Her phone filled with threats. Her mother's safe house needed fresh protection.

Hale's attorney secured his release when the independent judge reviewed the warrant irregularities. Hale walked into Shaw's office and saw the news still playing.

“Turn it off,” he said.

Olivia shook her head. “No. I need to see what they're using.”

He stood beside her through the whole clip. When it ended, he said, “I remember your real voice. I should have listened nine years ago.”

Shaw's team found the unedited interrogation in Mara's encrypted archive. The original footage showed threats, coercion, and a hidden time display that contradicted Bell's official timeline. A separate audio recording documented Kessler instructing an operative to prepare the fake confession.

“We can release this through court,” Shaw said. “With authentication. Not as a social media argument.”

Olivia nodded. “Then do it right.”

The next morning Bell was ordered to appear before a federal grand jury. But before that could happen, his chief aide delivered a sealed envelope to Shaw's office.

Inside was a sworn statement from Major Voss, offering to testify against Kessler and Bell.

The final sentence made everyone stop reading.

There had been a sixth soldier on the Nightglass rescue team.
