Chapter 14 - The Courtroom Lie

Margaret struck first in court.
Her attorney filed for a temporary protective order claiming Emily was violent and unstable.
The edited kitchen clip was attached as evidence.
When Emily’s lawyer, Leah Monroe, called to explain, Emily almost laughed.
“She attacked me, and now she wants protection from me?”
“It is a tactic,” Leah said. “An ugly one, but not an unusual one.”
“Can she win?”
“She can create noise. Our job is to bring facts.”
The hearing was held three days later.
Emily wore a navy maternity dress and no makeup over the fading bruise on her forehead.
She wanted the judge to see what had happened, not a polished version of it.
Margaret arrived in gray, moving slowly, as though she were the injured party.
She never looked at Emily.
Her attorney played the edited video.
There was Emily shoving Margaret.
There was the slap.
Then the clip ended.
Margaret dabbed her eyes.
Emily’s anger burned hot, but Leah had warned her not to react.
Then Leah stood.
“We have the original audio from the same period, Your Honor, as well as forensic evidence showing the submitted video was altered.”
Margaret’s head snapped up.
Leah presented the smart-speaker recording.
The courtroom heard Margaret’s voice:
Hit me back. Go ahead. Hit me again and I’ll make sure Daniel thinks you’re crazy.
Nobody moved.
Leah then submitted a report from the camera company showing that thirty-two seconds had been deleted from the original recording under Margaret’s administrator account.
Margaret whispered something to her lawyer.
The judge denied the protective order.
Then she addressed Margaret directly.
“This court is deeply concerned by the evidence of manipulation presented today.”
Outside the courtroom, Margaret finally looked at Emily.
“You think you won?”
Daniel stepped between them.
Leah raised a hand. “Do not engage.”
Margaret smiled at Emily.
“You still haven’t seen the whole video.”
Emily frowned.
“What whole video?”
Margaret’s lawyer grabbed her arm. “Do not say another word.”
But Margaret was already walking away.
That afternoon, Leah called.
“The security company located a second backup server.”
Emily sat up.
“Does it have the missing section?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
May you like
Leah paused.
“All of it. Including something Margaret apparently forgot the camera could see.”
