Chapter 16 - The Old Lake House

Daniel wanted to drive there himself.

Ruiz stopped him.

“If she is destroying evidence, confronting her could make things worse.”

“If she’s running, she’ll be gone before you get there.”

“We already have units on the way.”

Emily touched Daniel’s arm.

“Listen to him.”

He looked at her.

She could see the war inside him—the son who still remembered scraped knees and birthday cakes fighting the husband who had watched the full video.

“You don’t have to rescue her from consequences,” Emily said.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he handed Ruiz the lake-house alarm code.

Police found Margaret inside forty minutes later.

She had not fled.

She was feeding old documents into the stone fireplace.

Officers stopped her before most of them burned.

Among the papers were company records, forged authorization forms, and copies of Emily’s identification.

Margaret was arrested.

Daniel sat at the kitchen table when Ruiz called with the news.

He said nothing for nearly a minute.

Emily sat beside him.

“You okay?”

“No.”

It was the most honest answer he could have given.

“She’s my mother.”

“I know.”

“I hate what she did.”

“I know.”

“And part of me still wants someone to tell me there’s an explanation that makes her my mom again.”

Emily squeezed his hand.

“She is still your mom. That doesn’t erase what she did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And what she did doesn’t erase every good memory either. Both things can be true.”

His eyes filled.

That night, Rachel came over.

For the first time since the assault, the three of them sat together without arguing.

Rachel placed a small brass key on the table.

“I found this in Dad’s old toolbox.”

Daniel frowned. “What does it open?”

“There was a tag attached.”

She unfolded a yellowed piece of masking tape.

BLUE FILE - NURSERY CLOSET.

Emily stared at her.

“Our nursery?”

Rachel shook her head.

“The nursery in the lake house. The room you and I slept in when we were kids.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

Police still had the property secured.

Rachel continued.

“Dad wrote your name on the back.”

Daniel turned the tape over.
