Chapter 7 - What Robert Left Behind

Daniel read his father’s letter standing up.

Halfway through, he had to sit down.

Robert Hale had discovered that Margaret was quietly moving money from their family construction business into accounts she controlled.

At first she called it “borrowing.”

Then the numbers grew.

Twenty thousand.

Forty.

Seventy-five.

When Robert confronted her, she blamed panic after a bad investment and promised to repay everything.

He covered the losses to protect the company and his marriage.

He also made one change Margaret never forgave.

He removed her from all company accounts.

Daniel looked at Rachel. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Dad begged me not to. He thought Mom had stopped.”

“She stole from him.”

“She stole from all of us.”

Emily read the final page.

Robert had created a trust from his remaining ownership in the company. Daniel received income from it, but a separate portion would pass to Daniel’s first child after birth.

Emily frowned. “Margaret knew about this?”

Rachel nodded. “Dad told her.”

Daniel’s expression hardened. “How much?”

“Enough that she called it a betrayal.”

Emily’s hand moved over her belly.

Suddenly Margaret’s hatred felt less random.

“She thinks the baby is taking something from her.”

Rachel looked sick. “Maybe.”

Daniel stood. “No. She thinks everyone is taking something from her.”

His phone rang.

Detective Ruiz.

Daniel put the call on speaker.

“We traced one of the transfers from Mrs. Hale’s fraudulent line of credit,” Ruiz said. “It went to Hale Property Services, then moved again.”

“To where?” Daniel asked.

“A company called PBR Consulting.”

Rachel went silent.

Emily noticed.

“What?”

Rachel’s face lost color.

Daniel turned to her. “Rachel?”

She swallowed.

“PBR are Peter’s initials.”

Peter Brennan was their cousin and the controller at Hale Construction.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Ruiz continued. “Does that name mean something to you?”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“Yes.”

After the call, nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Rachel whispered, “Peter handles payroll, vendor payments, everything.”

Daniel walked to the home office and opened the company banking portal.

He entered his credentials.

An error message appeared.

PASSWORD CHANGED 7 HOURS AGO.

Daniel tried the emergency administrator login.

Another message appeared.

ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED.

Then his phone buzzed with an automated bank alert.

A wire transfer had been initiated that morning.

Amount: $240,000.

Authorized user: DANIEL HALE.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I didn’t authorize this.”
