Chapter 1 - Cover Your Face

“Cover your face.”

Celeste Ashford pressed an ivory silk scarf into Mara Ellison’s hands as if she were handing a servant a napkin.

The string quartet in the ballroom was only one wall away. Forty of New York’s richest families were arriving for Celeste’s engagement dinner, laughing beneath chandeliers worth more than Mara’s childhood home.

Mara did not touch the scarf.

“I’m serving dinner,” she said. “I can’t work with fabric over my mouth.”

“Then cover your hair and cheeks.” Celeste’s smile never reached her eyes. “Tonight matters.”

“So does breathing.”

Celeste stepped closer. Diamonds flashed at her throat. “You always did like making things difficult.”

Eleven years vanished in an instant.

A white studio. Hot lights. Two nineteen-year-old models waiting for the same campaign. Celeste laughing with the photographer. Mara finding a diamond bracelet in her own bag. Security rushing in. Celeste crying softly and saying, “I can’t believe she would do this.”

By sunrise, Mara’s career had been dead.

Now Celeste was engaged to Julian Vale, the billionaire who owned the mansion Mara cleaned five days a week.

Mara looked at the silk scarf again.

Her younger sister Nora’s tuition deposit was due in twelve days.

That number decided everything.

Mara tied the scarf around her head and lower face.

Celeste relaxed.

“No one important asks questions about maids,” she whispered.

Mara’s stomach tightened.

“You said that eleven years ago too.”

For one second, Celeste’s face changed.

Then the mask returned.

“Champagne. Dining room. Now.”

Mara picked up the silver tray and walked through the doors.

Conversation flickered around her. Guests glanced at the covered maid, then looked away exactly as Celeste had predicted.

At the center table sat Julian Vale.

Thirty-eight. Dark suit. No tie. Calm eyes that missed very little.

Mara had worked in his home for six months, but they had barely spoken beyond polite instructions.

She leaned forward to refill his water.

Julian stopped talking.

His eyes lifted to hers.

“What happened to your face?”

Mara froze.

Across the table, Celeste answered before she could.

“She had some kind of cosmetic procedure.”

Julian turned slowly toward his fiancée.

“Did she?”

Mara felt every guest listening without looking.

Then a small voice cut through the room.

“But she wasn’t hiding yesterday.”

Sophie Vale, Julian’s seven-year-old niece, pointed at Mara with a butter knife.

Celeste’s smile cracked.

Julian placed his wineglass down.

“Who told you to wear that scarf?”

Mara looked at Celeste.

Celeste’s fingers tightened around her napkin.

“Answer him,” Sophie said.

May you like

Mara reached for the knot behind her head.

And every light in the dining room went out.
