Chapter 17 - Inside the Locket

Every eye turned to Mara.

She touched the locket.

“My mother gave me this. That’s all.”

Richard was still on the line.

“No, Mara. That’s what she told you.”

The call ended.

Mara unclasped the chain with shaking fingers.

The locket opened normally on one side.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Mara and Nora as children.

Nothing else.

Julian took a magnifying lamp from a desk drawer and examined the dented hinge.

“There’s a seam.”

Mara frowned.

He used the tip of a paper clip to press a nearly invisible catch.

The back panel released.

A micro memory card fell onto the table.

Mara stared at it.

“No.”

Nora whispered, “Mom put that there?”

Their mother had died eight years earlier after a short illness.

She had never mentioned Richard Ashford.

Julian inserted the card into an offline reader.

A folder appeared.

ELLISON - IF NEEDED.

Mara’s eyes burned.

The first file was an audio recording.

Her mother’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, then Richard Ashford finally came looking for what he thinks I kept.”

Mara gripped the table.

Nora began to cry silently.

Their mother continued.

“I worked temporary bookkeeping for Ashford Public Relations. I found payments to a security contractor named Brent Cole. The payments started before Julian Vale’s accident and continued after it.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“I copied the records because I was scared. Richard found out. He threatened my job and my girls.”

Mara could barely breathe.

“He told me Mara had already made trouble by seeing too much. When the jewelry accusation happened, I understood what they were doing. I hid the copies where no one would think to look.”

Nora covered her mouth.

The recording ended with their mother saying, “Mara, if you ever find this, I’m sorry I let you believe losing your career was your fault.”

Mara broke.

Not loudly.

She sat down and covered her face with both hands.

Nora wrapped her arms around her.

For years Mara had wondered if she had been too trusting, too stubborn, too poor to fight back.

Her mother had known.

Her mother had tried to protect her.

The card also held bank ledgers, emails, and a scanned memo from Richard ordering Brent to create “mechanical leverage” before the old board vote.

Moreno looked at Julian.

“This is enough to reopen everything.”

Julian nodded.

Then a final file appeared.

A video recorded by Mara’s mother.

She looked directly into the camera.

“There is one more person involved. Someone inside the Vale family helped Richard after Edmund died.”

The video cut to black before she said the name.
