Chapter 11 - Box 14C

The Vale archive was beneath the east wing, behind a steel door Mara had polished twice a week without ever knowing what it protected.
Julian entered the code himself.
Rachel followed.
Mara almost stayed behind.
Then she remembered Celeste’s smile.
She went in.
Rows of gray storage boxes stretched beneath white lights.
Julian found 14C on the third shelf.
A red strip across the lid read: PRIVATE - E. VALE.
“My father’s initial,” Julian said.
He lifted the lid.
Inside was Mara’s old modeling portfolio.
Her breath caught.
There she was at nineteen, laughing into a camera, wearing a yellow dress she had forgotten existed.
Beneath the photos sat a copy of the police incident report from the stolen-bracelet case.
Then agency emails.
Then something worse.
A handwritten note from Edmund Vale.
KEEP ELLISON OUT OF PRESS. ASHFORD SAYS SHE MAY CONTRADICT ACCIDENT ACCOUNT.
Mara read it twice.
“What does that mean?” Rachel asked.
Julian’s mouth hardened.
“It means my father knew who she was.”
Mara reached deeper into the box.
There was a settlement draft addressed to Mara Ellison.
She had never seen it.
The proposed amount was $250,000.
Reason: confidentiality concerning events of October 17.
Signature line: blank.
Attached to it was an email from Richard Ashford, Celeste’s father.
She’s young, broke, and already facing a theft allegation. She will not be credible after this week.
Mara’s knees weakened.
After this week.
The date was two days before the bracelet appeared in her bag.
Julian read over her shoulder.
His face went still in the frightening way powerful people sometimes became still right before they acted.
“The theft wasn’t just Celeste protecting her modeling career,” he said.
Mara looked at him.
“No.”
Rachel finished the thought.
“They needed to destroy Mara’s credibility before she could talk about the crash.”
Mara wanted to be shocked.
Instead she felt tired.
Eleven years of doors closing.
Eleven years of managers whispering.
Eleven years of taking jobs beneath people who looked through her.
All because a rich family needed a cleaner story.
Julian closed his eyes.
“My family helped them.”
“You were unconscious,” Mara said.
“My father wasn’t.”
He took out his phone.
“I’m calling Moreno.”
Mara touched his wrist.
“Wait.”
He looked at her.
At the bottom of the box was a black flash drive labeled with one word.
STUDIO.
Mara picked it up.
“Play this first.”
Julian inserted it into an offline laptop.
A single video file appeared.
The timestamp was from eleven years ago.

The thumbnail showed Mara’s old modeling studio.
And in the corner of the frame stood Celeste, holding a diamond bracelet.
