Chapter 11 - The Empty House

Detective Ramirez said it was a trap.
Claire said they already knew that.
The address led to an abandoned rental house on the edge of town, one Amanda's family had owned years earlier.
Police set up surveillance before dusk.
No Amanda.
No Trent.
At 5:58, a burner phone taped beneath the porch railing began ringing.
Ramirez answered on speaker.
Amanda's voice came through.
“Claire.”
“I'm here.”
“Put Lily on.”
“No.”
“She is my daughter.”
“And you terrified her.”
Amanda's breath shook. “You don't understand what's happening.”
“Then explain it.”
“Trent has lost his mind.”
Claire glanced at Ramirez.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Where is the guardianship letter?”
“With me.”
“Why steal it?”
“Because Daniel was going to take Lily from me.”
Ethan listened from an unmarked police vehicle fifty yards away with Naomi.
He was not supposed to be hearing the call.
Naomi had forgotten to mute the relay.
Amanda continued.
“Daniel turned Ethan against me.”
Ethan's fingers curled.
Claire's voice sharpened. “You withheld food from a seven-year-old.”
“He was defiant.”
“You called him baggage.”
“I was angry.”
“You told your daughter he wasn't her brother.”
Silence.
Then Amanda whispered, “I wanted Lily to understand that Ethan's future was not her future.”
Claire stared at the phone. “What does that mean?”
Amanda started crying.
Not loudly.
Not theatrically.
For the first time, she sounded scared.
“Daniel's trust wasn't equal before.”
Naomi sat upright.
“What?” Ethan whispered.
Amanda said, “His first will left most of everything to Ethan. The house. The business shares. The insurance. Lily had a protected fund, but Ethan got control when he turned twenty-five.”
Claire looked toward the police vehicle.
Amanda continued.
“Trent found it. He said Daniel would always choose Ethan because of guilt over his first wife. He convinced me to move money before Daniel changed everything.”
“Convinced you?” Claire said. “You signed documents.”
“I know.”
“And then?”
“I wanted Ethan sent to boarding school. That's all. I wanted distance. I wanted Daniel to see him as a problem instead of… instead of the center of the family.”
Ethan felt sick.
Amanda had not hated him because he did something wrong.
She hated what she thought he represented.
Claire asked, “Did you know Trent cut Daniel's brakes?”
“No.”
A long pause.
“Not until after.”
Ramirez's eyes narrowed.
“Where is Trent?”
Amanda began to answer.
A sharp sound cut through the phone.
A door slamming.
Amanda gasped.
Then Trent's voice came through, close and furious.
“You stupid—”
The line went dead.
Ramirez shouted to his team.
“Trace it now!”
Thirty seconds later, dispatch came back with a location.
Naomi looked at Ethan.
May you like
Her face went pale.
The phone was transmitting from Lily's elementary school.
