Chapter 17 - The Story They Sold

Cameras appeared outside Daniel's house before lunch.
Reporters shouted questions from the sidewalk.
“Mr. Brooks, did you instruct your son to record his stepmother?”
“Is your wife accusing you of coercive control?”
“Did you fake evidence against her brother?”
Amanda watched from police custody and told investigators the recordings were fake.
It barely mattered.
Online, truth moved slower than outrage.
Daniel wanted to make a statement.
Naomi stopped him.
“You do not fight edited audio with an emotional press conference.”
“What do I do?”
“Authenticate the originals.”
A digital-forensics expert compared the files.
The fake recordings contained splices, altered timestamps, and voice-cloning artifacts.
The originals from Ethan's device matched the recorder hardware signature and cloud upload logs.
But the process took time.
At school, Ethan's name spread anyway.
He had not returned to class yet, but other kids sent messages through the game chat he used.
LIAR.
SPY KID.
YOUR DAD PAID YOU.
He deleted the app.
Daniel found him sitting on the back stairs.
“Want company?”
“No.”
Daniel sat three steps away anyway.
Not close.
Just there.
After a minute Ethan said, “People think I made it up.”
“I know.”
“I didn't.”
“I know.”
“You didn't before.”
Daniel looked down.
“No.”
That honesty hurt less now.
Ethan asked, “Why did you make the recorder instead of just taking me with you?”
Daniel took a long time to answer.
“Because I thought evidence would let me fix everything neatly.”
“Families aren't neat.”
Daniel almost smiled. “Apparently my seven-year-old knows more than I do.”
Ethan stared at the yard.
“Are you going to divorce Amanda?”
“Yes.”
“What happens to Lily?”
“She stays Lily. Your sister. Nothing changes that.”
“Mom said—”
Daniel interrupted gently. “Amanda said something cruel because she wanted power over both of you. Biology doesn't get to erase a relationship you already built.”
Ethan breathed out.
That evening, the forensic report cleared Daniel and authenticated the original recordings.
News outlets began correcting earlier coverage.
Then Ramirez arrived with urgent news.
Police had located Mark Heller.
He had been caught trying to cross into Canada with cash and fake identification.
Under questioning, Mark agreed to talk.
In exchange for consideration, he told detectives where Trent was going next.
Not out of state.
Not out of the country.
Back to the Brooks house.
Daniel frowned. “Why?”
Ramirez looked at Ethan.
“Because there's one piece of evidence Trent still believes exists only there.”
“The recorder is broken,” Ethan said.
“Not the recorder.”
Ramirez placed a photograph on the table.
It showed the birdhouse from Daniel's garage.
“He wants what you hid inside it.”
Ethan stared.
“I already found the note.”
May you like
Daniel's face went pale.
“The note wasn't the only thing in that birdhouse.”
