Chapter 19 - No More Secrets

Trent ran through the backyard and into the wooded drainage trail behind the Brooks property.

Police surrounded the area.

For forty minutes, helicopters circled overhead.

Then a K-9 unit found him hiding beneath an abandoned footbridge.

He surrendered after officers ordered him out.

No dramatic final speech.

No last-minute escape.

Just a tired man covered in mud, holding a stolen handgun he finally placed on the ground.

For Ethan, the quiet ending felt strange.

After so much fear, he expected thunder.

Instead, Trent was handcuffed and driven away.

Weeks passed.

Daniel came home for good.

He used crutches now.

Amanda entered a plea agreement on financial fraud and child-neglect charges while cooperating in the cases against Trent and Mark. The court allowed supervised contact with Lily, but no unsupervised visits.

Trent faced charges connected to the financial scheme, the attack on Daniel, evidence tampering, stalking, and the threats against the family.

Mark agreed to testify.

The legal details became a language adults used in other rooms.

Ethan cared about different things.

Breakfast.

Doors that did not lock from the outside.

A refrigerator he was allowed to open.

A father who now asked, “Do you want to tell me, or do you want me to just sit here?”

Sometimes Ethan chose neither.

Daniel stayed anyway.

Therapy started on Tuesdays.

Ethan hated the first session.

Lily loved the playroom.

By the fourth week, Ethan finally told the therapist about the noodles.

Not the police.

Not the recorder.

The noodles.

“How did that make you feel?” she asked.

“Like I had to earn food.”

“And now?”

He thought about it.

“Like I still check everybody else's plate.”

That night Daniel cooked roasted chicken.

Same meal from the night everything broke open.

He placed identical plates in front of Ethan and Lily.

Lily immediately moved one chicken leg from her plate to Ethan's.

Daniel smiled. “You know there's more in the kitchen.”

“I know.”

“Then why give him yours?”

Lily shrugged. “Because I want to.”

Ethan moved a roll onto her plate.

“Trade.”

Daniel looked away for a second.

Ethan pretended not to notice his eyes were wet.

After dinner, Amanda called for her scheduled supervised video visit.

Lily talked about school.

Then she asked, “Do you want to say hi to Ethan?”

Amanda became still.

Ethan almost walked away.

Instead, he sat beside Lily.

Amanda looked at him through the screen.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“I owe you an apology that is bigger than one sentence.”

Ethan said nothing.

“So I'm not going to ask you to forgive me.”

That surprised him.

Amanda continued, “I was jealous of the place you had in your father's heart. I turned that jealousy into cruelty. Trent pressured me, but he did not make me take your food. He did not make me call you baggage. I did that.”

Lily looked down.

Amanda's voice shook.

“You deserved a safe home. I failed you.”

Ethan swallowed.

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But truth.

After the call, Daniel opened the kitchen junk drawer.

Inside lay the smashed recorder in an evidence bag.

Police had returned it after copying everything.

Ethan stared at it.

“Throw it away,” he said.

Daniel nodded.

Then Lily ran into the kitchen holding something behind her back.

“Wait.”

She placed a small envelope on the table.

DAD wrote across the front in Ethan's handwriting.

Ethan frowned.

“I didn't write that.”

Lily shook her head.

“I found it inside my backpack with the memory card.”

Daniel opened the envelope.

May you like

Inside was one final note.

And it was in Amanda's handwriting.
