Chapter 1 - The Door I Was Never Supposed to Open

I missed my flight to Tokyo by eleven minutes.
That mistake saved my wife.
At 2:03 A.M., I unlocked the side door of my estate and stepped inside, expecting darkness, silence, and maybe the faint sound of Alora's sleep machine from upstairs. Instead, something heavy slammed against metal.
Then I heard my wife whimper.
Not cry. Whimper.
The sound made every muscle in my body lock.
I moved down the hall without turning on a light. The master bedroom door stood half open. Through the gap, I saw Alora curled on the floor in a white nightshirt, eight months pregnant, both arms wrapped around her belly.
My mother had one fist twisted in her hair.
"Cry louder," Corrine hissed. "Maybe pain will help you remember the safe code."
My sister Sloan swung a sledgehammer at the fireproof vault built into the bedroom wall. The steel door boomed with each hit.
"Make her talk, Mom," Sloan snapped. "The deeds have to be transferred before he gets back."
A suitcase lay open on our bed. Alora's jewelry was inside. So were property deeds, passports, and two folders from my private office.
I wanted to charge through that door and tear my mother away from my wife.
But rage is loud, and evidence is quiet.
I stepped backward, raised my phone, and started recording in 4K.
For four minutes, I watched the two women I had trusted most reveal exactly who they were.
My mother slapped Alora when she refused to speak. Sloan threatened to "make the baby everybody's problem" if Alora kept fighting them.
My hands shook so hard I had to brace the phone against the wall.
When the video finished syncing to my private cloud, I called 911.
"What's your emergency?" the dispatcher asked.
I raised my voice just enough for the women in the bedroom to hear me.
"My name is Thane Sterling. I'm at 4500 Ocean View Drive. Two armed intruders are attacking my pregnant wife and trying to break into my safe. Send police and medical help now."
The sledgehammer stopped.
Silence swallowed the hallway.

Then the bedroom door slowly opened.
My mother stepped into view, still gripping a fistful of Alora's hair.
