Chapter 9 - My Mother Had a Room Ready

The next morning, police searched Corrine's house.

I had paid for that house.

For twelve years, I had covered the mortgage, taxes, staff, and every renovation she requested because I told myself caring for a parent was honorable.

I had never imagined I was financing a command center against my own wife.

In the upstairs guest room, officers found a crib.

Not an old family crib.

A brand-new one.

There were newborn clothes, diapers, formula, bottles, a rocking chair, and a framed silver plaque engraved with my son's planned name.

"She knew the name?" Alora asked when Ortiz showed us the photos.

We had told only four people.

My mother had not been one of them.

"There's more," Ortiz said.

Inside Corrine's desk was a folder titled TRANSITION.

It contained a weekly schedule for the baby's feeding, medical appointments, and "maternal separation." Another page listed possible nannies.

At the bottom, my mother had written: Alora contact only if therapist approves.

Alora stared at the page for a long time.

Then she got up and walked into the bathroom.

I heard her lock the door.

I didn't follow.

A year earlier, I would have knocked, told her everything would be okay, and tried to force reassurance into a situation that didn't deserve it.

Instead, I sat outside the door.

"I'm here," I said. "You don't have to answer me."

Several minutes later, the door opened.

Her eyes were red.

"She decorated a nursery for my baby."

"I know."

"She planned my disappearance like I was an inconvenience."

I reached for her, then stopped before touching her.

Alora stepped into my arms herself.

That mattered.

Later that afternoon, Corrine was released on bond under strict conditions: no contact with us, no approach within five hundred yards, electronic monitoring.

Mara warned me not to underestimate her.

"She lost access to you," Mara said. "People who build their identity around control don't handle that well."

At 6:40 P.M., the alarm at our estate triggered.

Security cameras showed no person entering.

But when the guard checked the nursery, one window was open.

On the floor beneath it sat the silver plaque from Corrine's secret nursery.

And taped to the back was a message:

YOU CAN'T KEEP HIM FROM HIS FAMILY.
