Chapter 8 - The Doctor Who Never Examined Her

Mara found the answer buried in the custody file.

A psychiatric evaluation had been scheduled for Friday morning.

Not requested.

Scheduled.

The evaluator, Dr. Malcolm Vey, had never met Alora.

Yet a draft letter on Grant Hale's server already described her as "paranoid," "emotionally volatile," and "potentially dangerous to herself and her unborn child."

"That's impossible," Alora said. "How can a doctor write that without seeing me?"

"He can't ethically," Mara replied. "But someone was clearly expecting the appointment to produce a predetermined result."

I felt sick.

The plan was brutally simple. Frighten Alora. Isolate her. Create incidents. Record her reactions. Then send her to a cooperative evaluator and call the fear evidence of instability.

My mother's cruelty had not been random.

It had been strategy.

Ortiz obtained an emergency warrant for Grant's office. By that evening, officers carried out computers, files, and two locked evidence boxes.

Grant was nowhere to be found.

His assistant claimed he had left for a client meeting.

His car was found at the airport.

No record showed him boarding a flight.

Meanwhile, social media exploded with anonymous posts accusing Alora of manipulating me against my family. Someone leaked that she had once attended grief counseling after her father's death.

"They're turning therapy into proof I'm crazy," she said.

I watched her reading comments until her breathing changed.

I took the phone from her hand.

"Don't read that garbage."

"Don't tell me what not to read."

I stopped.

She was right again.

"Sorry."

Alora leaned back against the pillows. "You keep trying to fix everything in one move. You can't."

"Then tell me what you need."

"I need you to understand that even if they all go to jail tomorrow, I still have to live with what happened."

I nodded.

That night, Mara called with a new discovery.

The police had recovered a handwritten calendar from Corrine's home.

Friday was circled in red.

Beside it were three words:

REMOVE HER FIRST.

May you like

Underneath was a second note.

BABY COMES NEXT.
