Chapter 11 - Claire's Last Warning

Daniel spent that night beside Lily’s bed.

He did not sleep.

Every few minutes, his mind rebuilt the last day of Claire’s life and then destroyed it again.

She had tried to warn him.

He had been too busy to answer.

At sunrise, Lily opened her eyes and found him sitting in the chair.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

“Are you mad at me?”

The question hurt more than anything Gavin had done.

“No. Never for this.”

“Nora said you would hate me if Grandma got in trouble.”

Daniel moved to the bed. “Listen to me. When a grown-up tells a child to keep a secret because someone will get hurt, that secret needs to be told. You hear me?”

Lily nodded.

He kissed her forehead.

Later that morning, Mara found the mechanic who had inspected Claire’s wrecked car. He was retired and living in Arizona. On a recorded call, he admitted Gavin had hired him privately before the insurance adjuster arrived.

“Mr. Ross told me to focus on driver error,” the mechanic said. “Said Mrs. Mercer had been distracted.”

“Was she?” Mara asked.

“I couldn’t prove that.”

“What did you find?”

A long silence.

“Damage to the brake system that did not match the impact.”

Daniel’s hand closed around the edge of the table.

“Why wasn’t that in the report?”

“Because Mr. Ross said the family wanted privacy. And because I took money I should not have taken.”

Mara asked for every record he still had.

At noon, Nora’s lawyer filed a motion demanding access to the Mercer house and accusing Daniel of isolating Lily to coach her story.

Nora released a statement through counsel claiming she was the victim of “a frightened child’s misunderstanding and a grieving husband’s violence.”

Daniel wanted to destroy the statement line by line.

Mara stopped him.

“Silence is your friend right now.”

“My daughter is being called a liar.”

“Then build a case that makes people ashamed they ever doubted her.”

That afternoon, Jenna agreed to give a formal statement at police headquarters.

She never made it there.

A dark SUV hit the side of her protection vehicle at an intersection, forcing it onto the curb. A masked driver jumped out and tried to open Jenna’s door before an officer fired a warning shot.

The attacker fled.

Jenna survived with a fractured wrist and cuts across her face.

When Mara reached the hospital, Jenna grabbed her sleeve.

“The SUV,” she said. “I know the logo.”

“What logo?”

“Mercer Industrial.”

Mara’s phone buzzed before she could respond.
